Study in Germany After Diploma / 3-Year Degree

TL;DR: German master's admission turns on whether your qualification counts as a full university degree and how many credits sit behind it. A 3-year, 180 ECTS bachelor's is explicitly enough at KIT; at HAW Hamburg the baseline is 210 credit points and you make up 30 of them. A polytechnic or vocational diploma is not a bachelor equivalent, and APS India says so in writing. Check the specific programme, not the country.

Nobody in a German admissions office asks how many years you studied. They ask what your certificate is rated as, and how many credits sit behind it. That single distinction decides whether a diploma holder and a 3-year graduate get the same answer, and they usually do not.

Germany counts credits, not years

German universities work in ECTS credits. Most master's want a bachelor's worth 180 ECTS or more behind it. A 3-year degree normally reaches that figure; a diploma often stops short of it, and the gap is what the university is actually rejecting when it turns a diploma down. Look your own certificate up first with the anabin recognition walkthrough, and note that uni-assist's own admission checker was built with the DAAD and the Zentralstelle fuer auslaendisches Bildungswesen and points back to anabin for the detail.

Where a 3-year bachelor's is explicitly enough

Stop reading forum threads and read entry requirements. KIT states the rule for its Mechanical Engineering M.Sc. plainly: a completed bachelor's in engineering or natural sciences with a minimum of 180 ECTS and a standard study period of at least three years. Its Mechatronics and Information Technology M.Sc. says the same. A three-year Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi bachelor's that reaches 180 ECTS satisfies that sentence as written.

What KIT does instead of counting years is count content. Mechanical Engineering asks for 37 ECTS of engineering fundamentals, 26 ECTS of application-related fundamentals and 12 ECTS of electrical engineering and IT fundamentals, plus a twelve-week internship. Mechatronics asks for 6 CP of electrical engineering and information technology, 6 CP of technical mechanics and thermodynamics, 21 CP of higher mathematics and 6 CP of control engineering. Your transcript either contains those or it does not, and that is the actual decision.

Where three years costs you a semester

Universities of applied sciences frequently build on the German four-year model. HAW Hamburg's master's require a bachelor's or Diplom of at least three and a half years and 210 credit points. If yours is a three-year, 180-credit degree, you are not refused: on the Automotive Engineering M.Sc. you complete an additional 30 credit points in an initial semester before full enrolment, and on Information and Communications Engineering you earn those 30 credit points within the first two semesters of the master's.

Treat that as a real cost. An extra semester is rent, a semester contribution, and one more slice of the year your visa and your blocked account have to cover. It is also why the same applicant can be a straightforward admit at a technical university and a five-semester project at an applied one.

One country where four years is the rule

Vietnamese applicants have a stricter baseline than the rest. The APS at the German Embassy in Hanoi states that, under Kultusministerkonferenz rules in force since 15 March 2009, admission to a postgraduate programme requires the completion of a course of study lasting at least four years. If you hold a Vietnamese qualification, that sentence sits in front of every other requirement on this page.

Why a diploma usually does not qualify

An engineering diploma or a non-degree diploma is generally not accepted for direct master's entry, because German evaluators do not rate it as a full university degree. APS India puts it in writing on its own leaflet for graduates: certificates and diplomas from a recognised polytechnic or vocational training centre cannot by themselves be considered equivalent to a bachelor study programme at a recognised Indian university. You are asked to submit them anyway, with the marksheets, but they are documented rather than counted.

That is a solvable problem, not a closed door. It just means the fix has to happen before the application, not during it.

QualificationAcceptance for master's
3-year bachelor's, 180 ECTSExplicitly enough at KIT; module fit decides
3-year bachelor's at a HAWAccepted, plus 30 credit points to make up
Vietnamese degree under 4 yearsNot sufficient for postgraduate entry
Polytechnic / vocational diplomaNot a bachelor equivalent on its own
Diploma plus top-up degreeYes, after completion

Your options if you hold a diploma

  • Finish a full bachelor's. The slowest route and the one that removes every doubt later.
  • Take a bridge or top-up program. Some universities admit diploma holders into a track that ends in a full bachelor's.
  • Map your diploma to first-year credit. Not every institution does this, but where it works it shortens the top-up considerably.
  • Get the certificate checked before you spend anything. Compare it against anabin and the target programme's rules. See how recognition is assessed.

If you are heading for a bachelor's instead

The rules changed recently for Indian school leavers. From winter semester 2026/27 APS India applies a minimum of 70 per cent on the Class XII certificate, and keeps two routes open: Studienkolleg eligibility on the strength of Class XII plus the APS, or direct subject-restricted admission on Class XII plus the APS plus one completed academic year of university study. Applications filed before 15 March 2026 were assessed on the earlier criteria. See the class XII threshold explained.

The paperwork this route adds

Applicants for a bachelor's or a state examination programme who did not obtain their entrance qualification in Germany usually need a VPD, a preliminary review by uni-assist. TUM's deadlines for ordering one are 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer, and uni-assist normally needs about four to six weeks, so order it well before those dates. A VPD is accepted at TUM for three years after it is issued.

The fees are the same whether you go the VPD route or the standard one: 75 euros for the first course of study in a semester and 30 euros for each further one, non-refundable regardless of the outcome. Master's applicants at TUM do not need a VPD at all, which is a common and expensive misunderstanding. See VPD, APS and direct application compared.

Language proof does not change with your route

Whichever path you take, the program's language bar still applies: IELTS 6.0-7.0 for English-taught programs, or TestDaF TDN 4 / DSH-2 for German-taught ones. One warning that costs Indian applicants visas rather than places: the German missions state that medium-of-instruction letters and exemption letters will not be considered, and that an application may be refused if you keep sending them instead of a recognised certificate. Browse the English-taught program list, or compare exams in which German test to sit.

APS still applies, and it looks at exactly this

Applicants from India, China, Vietnam and Mongolia need an APS certificate, and the APS assesses your degree's standing, which is the same question your universities are asking. One timing rule matters here more than anywhere: APS India issues certificates on the basis of the qualifications completed and documented when your application is processed, so applying mid-way through a top-up gets you a certificate describing the old qualification, and a re-evaluation means paying the fee again. See the APS process in all four countries.

Work rights once you are in

Study time comes with 140 full days or 280 half days a year of work at the 13.90 euros/hour minimum wage, and the degree ends with an 18-month job-seeker visa. See the student work rules and the post-study visa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Often yes. KIT accepts a bachelor's of at least 180 ECTS over at least three years for its engineering master's. Applied universities more often want 210 credit points and let you make up the difference.
Usually not for direct entry. APS India states that polytechnic and vocational diplomas are not by themselves equivalent to a bachelor's degree. Topping up to a full degree is the standard fix.
Most programs want about 180 ECTS. Universities of applied sciences often build on 210, with an initial or parallel semester to close the 30-credit gap.
It applies to Vietnamese qualifications: the APS in Hanoi requires a completed course of study of at least four years for postgraduate admission.
For a bachelor's or state examination programme without a German entrance qualification, usually yes, and it takes uni-assist about four to six weeks. Master's applicants at TUM do not need one.
Yes, if you studied in India, China, Vietnam or Mongolia. APS assesses your degree's standing and the visa requires it.

You probably qualify for more than you think.
