Grundlegende Voraussetzung für den Zugang zum Masterstudium ist ein erster berufsqualifizierender Hochschulabschluss, im Normalfall ein Bachelor-Abschluss. Die Bachelor-Abschlüsse von (Fach-)Hochschulen und Universitäten sind dabei grundsätzlich gleichwertig. Um an dieser Stelle aber einem Missverständnis vorzubeugen: Nicht jedes abgeschlossene Studium einer beliebigen Fachrichtung qualifiziert automatisch für jeden Masterstudiengang! Welche Fachrichtungen als Qualifikation anerkannt werden, ist in der Prüfungs- und Studienordnung des Masterstudienganges geregelt.
Um in einem Masterstudiengang zugelassen zu werden, müssen Bewerber*innen darüber hinaus ihre besondere Qualifikation, d. h. ihre Eignung für den einzelnen Studiengang nachweisen. Wie diese Eignung überprüft wird, gestaltet sich je nach Studiengang verschieden.
