English Proficiency

No university-wide IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, or Duolingo minimum is published on HAW Kiel's central admissions pages. The university's own guidance is that English proficiency requirements are set per degree programme and listed on that programme's own page, not on a central admissions page. Three master's programmes are taught fully in English: M.Sc. Industrial Engineering, M.Sc. Computer Science, and M.Sc. Data Science. Applicants should check the specific programme page for its required English test and minimum score; almost all bachelor's programmes are German-taught.

German Language

For applicants whose university entrance qualification was not obtained at a German-speaking institution, HAW Kiel requires one of: DSH-2 or DSH-3 (Deutsche Sprachpruefung fuer den Hochschulzugang); OR TestDaF with all four sub-tests at TestDaF level (TDN) 4 or higher, and HAW Kiel accepts TestDaF certificates only from the Bochum or Hagen TestDaF institutes; OR DSD II (Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz, second level); OR a Feststellungspruefung/assessment-of-suitability certificate for foreign study applicants. No further German certificate is required if the applicant already holds a Goethe-Institut minor or major certificate, Goethe-Zertifikat C2, the Austrian Sprachdiplom OeSD C2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, or has completed vocational training in Germany. This applies to the German-taught programmes that make up the great majority of HAW Kiel's degree offerings; no separate university-wide B1/B2 minimum is published outside these certificate-based thresholds.
