About Fachhochschule für Interkulturelle Theologie Hermannsburg
The Fachhochschule für Interkulturelle Theologie Hermannsburg (FIT) was a small, church-affiliated University of Applied Sciences specialising exclusively in intercultural theology. It was established in 2012 under the auspices of the Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society (ELM) in Hermannsburg, Lower Saxony, and operated for thirteen years.
FIT offered English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes in Intercultural Theology, attracting students from across the Global South and the Lutheran diaspora. Its programmes were grounded in cross-cultural mission studies, contextual theology, and ecumenical dialogue.
The institution graduated its final cohort in summer 2025 and formally closed on 18 December 2025. Both its BA and MA programmes in Intercultural Theology have been transferred to the Faculty of Theology at the University of Göttingen from the winter semester 2025/26. A ten-year endowed professorship at Göttingen, funded by the supporting churches, continues the institution's academic legacy.
