Living in Essen

Essen is the largest city in the Ruhr metropolitan area, with roughly 580,000 inhabitants. Once the heart of German coal and steel industry, Essen has reinvented itself as a culture and education hub - it was European Capital of Culture (Ruhr 2010) and consistently ranks among Germany's most liveable mid-size cities. The cost of living is significantly lower than Munich or Frankfurt, and the city has excellent rail connections (ICE) to Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Dortmund.

Student life & support

With around 400 students, HBK Essen offers an intimate, studio-focused environment. The Essen campus occupies a historically significant coal-mine complex in the Kupferdreh district, providing large studio and workshop spaces. An international student advisory team (German, English, and Chinese-language support via WeChat) supports visa, housing, and study questions. Students in Wuppertal benefit from that city's vibrant cultural scene, including the internationally renowned Pina Bausch / Tanztheater Wuppertal. BAföG financial aid is available through Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg for eligible students.
