About HMU Health and Medical University Erfurt

HMU Health and Medical University Erfurt is an innovative, private, state-recognised university specialising in training health professionals. Located in the heart of Erfurt at the heritage-listed Villa Marienhaus, the university offers state examination programmes in human medicine and dentistry alongside bachelor's and master's degrees in biomedical science, psychology, medical education, physician assistant studies, psychotherapy, and implantology. The Erfurt campus began teaching in the summer semester 2023 and forms part of the IRO Group university network, which includes MSB Medical School Berlin, MSH Medical School Hamburg, and HMU Potsdam.

The university emphasises practice-oriented teaching, small cohorts with individual mentoring, and modern learning environments that blend on-site facilities with digital learning spaces. A distinctive feature is NC-free (numerus clausus-free) admission to the medicine state examination programme, with selection based instead on a written aptitude test and individual interview with integrated case simulation. On-campus facilities include a psychotherapeutic university clinic, biomedical research laboratory, experimental psychology labs, and a library with digital resources.

HMU Erfurt operates across three main sites in the city: the administrative headquarters at Villa Marienhaus, seminar spaces at the Alte Post building in the historic centre, and a research campus at Bindersleben. Clinical teaching for medicine students takes place at the partner Helios Klinikum Erfurt, where a dedicated teaching station was established in 2025.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

HMU Erfurt is a private university and charges tuition fees for all programmes. The human medicine state examination programme costs €1,500/month during the first and second study sections, and €300/month during the practical year (Praktisches Jahr). A one-time application fee of €500 and a one-time enrolment fee of €100 apply. Fees for bachelor's and master's programmes are not listed publicly on the official site. The Helios HMU support association offers a monthly stipend of €500 throughout the six-year medicine programme. There is no tuition-free public university status; this is a fully private institution.

Admission requirements

International applicants must hold a recognised higher education entrance qualification equivalent to the German Abitur. For the medicine and dentistry state examination programmes, selection is NC-free and based on a written medical aptitude test and an individual interview with integrated case simulation. German language proficiency of at least B2 (CEFR) is required for most programmes; the medicine programme requires C1. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must hold an APS certificate before applying (mandatory for visa and admission at state-recognised private universities under German federal rules), though the HMU Erfurt website does not explicitly reference this requirement — applicants should confirm with the International Office. Required documents include the application form, certified transcripts, motivation letter (1–4 pages), CV, passport copy, and proof of German language proficiency.

Application deadlines

Winter semester (October start): application deadline 1 March. Summer semester (April start): application deadline 1 September. These deadlines apply to exchange/incoming students; full-degree applicants should confirm directly with the admissions office.

Languages of instruction

Programmes are taught primarily in German. German language proficiency of at least B2 (CEFR) is required for admission; C1 is required for the medicine state examination programme.

Living in Thüringen

Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia in central Germany, known for its well-preserved medieval old town, cathedral, and Krämerbrücke (the only inhabited bridge north of the Alps). With roughly 215,000 inhabitants and approximately 12,000 students across three universities, it offers a compact, walkable student environment with significantly lower living costs than Munich, Hamburg, or Berlin — estimated at around €850/month including rent. The city has good rail connections to Leipzig, Weimar, and Frankfurt, and is part of the Thuringia cultural region.

Student life & support

HMU Erfurt's small, specialist campus fosters close contact between students and faculty. The university runs a Career Center, psychosocial counselling, and an International Office supporting both incoming and outgoing mobility. The broader Erfurt student community offers affordable housing (student dormitory rooms from €160–300/month), free German language courses, international welcome weeks at semester start, and active student associations. As a private medical university, social life is closely tied to the clinical and health-science student community rather than a large general university campus.
