Admissions & fees

What it costs

Hochschule Hannover is a public university in Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen). There are no general tuition fees for bachelor's or consecutive master's programmes for any nationality, including non-EU students. All enrolled students - including international exchange students - pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) that funds the Studentenwerk services: affordable meals in canteens, student housing, childcare, advisory services, and a semester transport ticket valid for all local, regional, and nationwide public transport in Germany. The exact semester contribution amount was not published on the pages fetched; prospective students should verify the current figure on the official Semesterbeitrag page before enrolling.

Admission requirements

International applicants with foreign school-leaving or higher-education certificates must apply through uni-assist (online only; non-certified copies accepted at application stage). Applicants from India, China (mainland, Hong Kong, Macau), and Vietnam must hold a valid APS certificate before the visa application; HsH references this requirement in line with German consulate rules. A Studienkolleg (preparatory college) pathway is available for students whose qualifications do not directly qualify for university admission. Seven bachelor's programmes in design and arts disciplines additionally require an artistic aptitude test. Language requirements: German-taught programmes require a recognised German-language certificate (DSH, TestDaF TDN 4, Goethe C1, or equivalent) at B2-C1 level; English-track modules for exchange students accept IELTS 5.5-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 72+. Applications are submitted via the university's online portal (Bewerbungsportal) or uni-assist depending on programme type.

Application deadlines

For degree-seeking international students: Faculty III design/media Master's programmes - 15 March; admission-restricted and Master's programmes generally - 15 May; artistic/aptitude-test programmes - 31 May; open-admission (NC-free) programmes - 15 July. These dates are referenced for Winter Semester 2026/27 intake. For exchange students: summer semester applications close 1 November; winter semester applications close 15 May.

How international applicants apply

Used (full processing via uni-assist, mandatory regardless of nationality). Hochschule Hannover (HsH, Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts) is a uni-assist member and has had uni-assist carry out the formal examination of foreign certificates since 1 May 2004. All applicants with foreign educational certificates - regardless of nationality, including university changers and Studienkolleg graduates - must apply via uni-assist; the university states that a direct application through its own portal leads to exclusion from the procedure. Online-only application via uni-assist with simple (non-certified) copies suffices; at least one recognised language certificate must be uploaded for the application to be processed. Uni-assist also checks whether direct higher-education access is possible or the Niedersachsen Studienkolleg (at Leibniz Universitaet Hannover) is required first.

Languages of instruction

The majority of programmes are taught in German. Faculty IV (Business and Computer Science) includes internationally oriented programmes such as International Business Studies. Exchange students from partner universities can access courses across all five faculties; English-proficiency courses are available for exchange students, with a minimum B1 level required and B2 generally expected for English-medium modules. German-taught programmes require B2 German proficiency.

Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.
