Living in Hannover

Hannover is the state capital of Lower Saxony, centrally located within Germany with strong rail connections to Berlin, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. It is described as one of the greenest major cities in Germany, with over 530 kilometres of cycle paths. The city hosts major annual events including one of northern Germany's largest public festivals and is home to significant trade-fair infrastructure (Deutsche Messe). Hannover is a mid-size city with a manageable cost of living relative to Munich or Hamburg, and has a well-developed public transport network that students access via their semester ticket.

Student life & support

The Studentenwerk Hannover manages student housing (furnished rooms and apartments near campuses); applications for student residences open mid-October to end-October for summer semester and mid-May to end-May for winter semester. Shared flats (Wohngemeinschaft/WG) are a common and often more affordable alternative. The semester contribution covers canteen meals, housing, childcare, and the Germany-wide semester transport ticket. All enrolled students receive university IT accounts, eduroam WiFi access, Moodle LMS, and campus computer/printer access. The International Office (Incoming Team) at Ricklinger Stadtweg 120 provides dedicated support for exchange and degree-seeking international students including a Housing Guide and arrival orientation. Statutory health insurance costs approximately €135/month (as of January 2025). Non-EU students must demonstrate financial resources of €992 per month (€11,904 for 12 months) as required for the student visa blocked account.
