Living in Kaiserslautern

Kaiserslautern is a mid-sized city of approximately 100,000 inhabitants in the Palatinate region of Rhineland-Palatinate, situated about 80 km southwest of Frankfurt. It is known for its affordable cost of living and student-friendly rental market. The city has a notable international presence through its close ties with the US military (Ramstein Air Base is nearby) and hosts a technology-oriented ecosystem including the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). The surrounding region offers forests, hiking, and proximity to the Palatinate Forest (Pfälzerwald), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Student life & support

Hochschule Kaiserslautern's International Office is present at all three campuses and offers dedicated support for incoming international students, including guidance on admission, visa, financing, and credit recognition. Student accommodation is available through Studierendenwerk Kaiserslautern, which operates dormitories at all three locations; private rental options with student-friendly rates also exist in the region. The university offers German language courses (A1-B2 level, both classroom and online) for enrolled international students and employees, though preparatory DSH/TestDaF courses are not provided on campus. A Buddy Programme and orientation support for new arrivals are referenced under the International Office's services. The university is certified as a family-friendly employer by Rhineland-Palatinate, indicating broader campus welfare provisions.
