About Hochschule Kaiserslautern (University of Applied Sciences)

Hochschule Kaiserslautern (University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern) is a practice-oriented public Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, with over 160 years of tradition in engineering education. It enrolls approximately 6,200 students across three campuses in Kaiserslautern, Pirmasens, and Zweibrücken, and offers over 50 degree programmes spanning technology, economics, design, health, and computer science.

The university is system-accredited and structured around five faculties: Applied Engineering (AING), Applied Logistics and Polymer Sciences (ALP), Building and Design (BG), Business Administration (BW), and Computer Sciences and Microsystems Technology (IMST). Research is organised under four applied focus areas: Integrated Miniaturised Systems, Sustainable Materials Products and Processes, Interaction Technology Empirical Research and Application, and Highly Efficient Technical Systems.

International students are supported by a dedicated International Office with presence at all three campuses, an on-site Internationales Studienkolleg (ISK) for foundation-year preparation, and a range of German language courses from A1 to B2. The university applies for admission via uni-assist and does not charge tuition fees, as Rhineland-Palatinate is a tuition-free federal state for all students regardless of nationality.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

No tuition fees are charged at Hochschule Kaiserslautern for any student, including non-EU international students, as Rhineland-Palatinate does not levy tuition fees. Students pay a semester contribution (Sozialbeitrag) each semester, which covers student union services (cafeteria, residence hall operations) and includes a Semesterticket for regional public transport. The exact semester contribution amount varies; students should check the current re-enrolment page or contact the university directly for the latest figure. Non-EU students must demonstrate proof of financing (typically a blocked bank account — Sperrkonto — of €11,904 for one year as per the 2024 statutory requirement) as part of the student visa application.

Admission requirements

International applicants with foreign educational certificates must apply through uni-assist (www.uni-assist.de). Applicants whose qualifications do not directly grant university entrance in Germany may need to pass the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) assessment test; the university's own Internationales Studienkolleg (ISK) offers a one-semester preparation course in Technology (T/TI) or Economics (W/WW) tracks with no tuition fees and small group teaching. German language proficiency at the required level for the target programme must be demonstrated at admission — the university states that applicants must reach the German level for admission even if they have other language skills; preparatory DSH/TestDaF courses are not offered on campus. Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants whose prior qualification is from those countries should check APS certificate requirements (mandatory for Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants applying to German universities) before submitting via uni-assist. For English-taught programmes, English proficiency evidence (IELTS, TOEFL, or medium-of-instruction letter) is required as specified by the individual programme.

Application deadlines

Specific application deadline dates are not published on the hs-kl.de English pages reviewed. International applicants are directed to uni-assist (www.uni-assist.de) and the FAQ section at hs-kl.de/en/international/international-office/from-abroad/studies-in/faq-in for current deadlines. Typical German HAW winter-semester deadlines via uni-assist fall in May–July; summer-semester deadlines fall in November–January. Verify current dates directly with the International Office or via the uni-assist portal before applying.

Languages of instruction

The majority of programmes are taught in German. Several bachelor's and master's programmes are available in English or with significant English-language content, including International Business Administration (bachelor's), Mechanical Engineering (bachelor's), Financial Services Management (master's), Information Management (master's), Innovations Management (master's), Motorsport Management (master's), Semiconductor Engineering and Manufacturing for Computer Scientists — SEMiCS (master's), and multiple double-degree programmes. Prospective students should verify the language of instruction for each programme on the official course listing at hs-kl.de/en/studying/overview-of-our-degree-courses.
