About Hochschule Niederrhein

Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR) is a public University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule / Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften) located in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia. Founded in 1971, it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021. The university holds system accreditation (Systemakkreditierung) and is recognised for its applied research and strong industry partnerships.

HSNR is organised into nine faculties covering Chemistry, Design, Engineering Sciences and Computer Science, Oecotrophology, Social Services, Textile and Clothing Technology, Business Sciences, Business Engineering, and Healthcare. It offers approximately 87 Bachelor's and 27 Master's programmes across three campuses, with a small number of programmes taught entirely or substantially in English.

Tuition & fees

As a public university in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hochschule Niederrhein charges no tuition fees for any student regardless of nationality. The mandatory semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covers the Studierendenwerk social fund, the student union (AStA), and the semester transport ticket (Deutschlandticket). For Winter Semester 2026/27 the total semester contribution is €371.30; for Summer Semester 2026 it is €353.30. NRW does not charge a separate non-EU tuition fee (unlike Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria).

Admission requirements

Non-EU international applicants (including Indian, Nigerian, Vietnamese, and Indonesian students) apply through the uni-assist portal. Applicants from India, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and Vietnam must provide an APS certificate issued by the German Embassy in their country; this document must be uploaded in the uni-assist application. Bachelor admission requires a recognised university entrance qualification (HZB equivalent). Indian applicants with Class XII ≥70% from a recognised board may be eligible; those without a directly qualifying school leaving certificate may need to complete a Studienkolleg. Master admission requires a completed, accredited bachelor's degree of at least three years. Language proficiency must be documented in all cases. German-taught programmes require C1 German (TestDaF TDN 4, DSH-2, Goethe C1, or equivalent); selected Engineering/IT programmes accept B2. English-taught programmes require B2–C1 English (IELTS or equivalent). The university's Language Centre offers German language courses (starting A1) for incoming students. Languages of instruction

The majority of degree programmes are taught in German. A C1 German level is required for most programmes; B2 is accepted for selected STEM fields (e.g. Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering). A small number of programmes are taught in English or are bilingual: Textile and Clothing Management (B.Sc.), Sales and Marketing (B.A.), International Management (M.A.), and Management of Textile Trade and Technology (M.Sc.) require B2–C1 English. Some programmes in International Marketing are partly taught in French.

Living in Nordrhein-Westfalen

Hochschule Niederrhein is split between two cities in the Lower Rhine region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Krefeld (population ~230,000) is a former textile and silk manufacturing city on the left bank of the Rhine, approximately 20 km north-west of Düsseldorf and 40 km south-west of Essen; it offers affordable rents relative to Düsseldorf and direct rail connections to the wider Ruhr metropolitan area. Mönchengladbach (population ~260,000) is a mid-sized city bordering the Netherlands, with a strong commercial and retail sector; it is well connected by train to Cologne (approx. 30 min) and Düsseldorf (approx. 25 min).

Student life & support

The Welcome Centre on Campus Krefeld-Süd (Building A, Room AE03a) provides counselling on visa, health insurance, blocked accounts (Sperrkonto), housing, and Anmeldung (registration). It also runs a Buddy Programme pairing international students with German peers and issues a Certificate for Intercultural Competence (ZIK). Limited dormitory places are available through the Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf in both Krefeld and Mönchengladbach; the Welcome Centre assists students not placed in a dormitory with private rental resources. The Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers free German courses from A1 level, including a preparatory German course held just before lectures begin each semester. The university also has an active sports programme (Hochschulsport) and student association (AStA).
