Admissions & fees

What it costs

As a public university in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hochschule Niederrhein charges no tuition fees for any student regardless of nationality. The mandatory semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covers the Studierendenwerk social fund, the student union (AStA), and the semester transport ticket (Deutschlandticket). For Winter Semester 2026/27 the total semester contribution is €371.30; for Summer Semester 2026 it is €353.30. NRW does not charge a separate non-EU tuition fee (unlike Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria).

Admission requirements

Non-EU international applicants (including Indian, Nigerian, Vietnamese, and Indonesian students) apply through the uni-assist portal. Applicants from India, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and Vietnam must provide an APS certificate issued by the German Embassy in their country; this document must be uploaded in the uni-assist application. Bachelor admission requires a recognised university entrance qualification (HZB equivalent). Indian applicants with Class XII ≥70% from a recognised board may be eligible; those without a directly qualifying school leaving certificate may need to complete a Studienkolleg. Master admission requires a completed, accredited bachelor's degree of at least three years. Language proficiency must be documented in all cases. German-taught programmes require C1 German (TestDaF TDN 4, DSH-2, Goethe C1, or equivalent); selected Engineering/IT programmes accept B2. English-taught programmes require B2-C1 English (IELTS or equivalent). The university's Language Centre offers German language courses (starting A1) for incoming students. Application deadlines via uni-assist: Winter Semester - 15 April to 15 June; Summer Semester - 15 October to 15 December.

Application deadlines

Non-EU applicants via uni-assist: Winter Semester - 15 April to 15 June; Summer Semester - 15 October to 15 December. EU/EEA applicants applying directly through HSNR's online portal: Winter Semester - 1 May to 15 September (unrestricted programmes) or 1 May to 15 July (admission-restricted programmes); Summer Semester - 1 December to 15 March (unrestricted) or 1 December to 15 January (restricted).

How international applicants apply

uni-assist full application for non-EU applicants: citizens of non-EU countries with a university entrance qualification obtained outside the EU must apply via uni-assist (online-only, EUR 75 + EUR 30 per extra choice; plus hochschulstart.de registration for NC bachelor programmes). EU/EEA citizens and other exception groups (German quals, German or EU degree holders, dual/part-time applicants) apply directly via the HSNR online portal.

Languages of instruction

The majority of degree programmes are taught in German. A C1 German level is required for most programmes; B2 is accepted for selected STEM fields (e.g. Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering). A small number of programmes are taught in English or are bilingual: Textile and Clothing Management (B.Sc.), Sales and Marketing (B.A.), International Management (M.A.), and Management of Textile Trade and Technology (M.Sc.) require B2-C1 English. Some programmes in International Marketing are partly taught in French.

Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.
