About Internationale Filmschule Köln

The ifs Internationale Filmschule Köln (ifs) is a specialist film and media school founded in 2000 as a non-profit company (gGmbH) on the initiative of the North Rhine-Westphalia state government and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. Located in Cologne's Schanzenstraße media quarter, it operates in close partnership with TH Köln, which awards the officially accredited Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees.

The school enrolls around 221 students (Winter Semester 2023/24) across seven specialisations of the BA Film programme and four English- or German-language Master's programmes covering 3D Animation, Digital Narratives, Serial Storytelling, and Entertainment Producing. Approximately one-third of students come from abroad, representing 34 countries.

The ifs is known for its small cohort sizes (typically 8-16 per intake), a strong practice-orientation with professional-grade facilities (Dolby Atmos cinema, film studio, VFX workstations), and a track record of alumni awards - over 205 prizes for ifs films as of the most recent published figure, including a Student Oscar.
