About Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH)
Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH) is a specialist medical university in Hannover, Lower Saxony, founded on 17 May 1965. It is one of the largest medical schools in Germany, combining university hospital, research, and teaching on a single integrated campus in the Roderbruch district. MHH holds the status of a state university (Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts) under Lower Saxony law.
MHH offers state-examination programmes in Medicine and Dentistry, bachelor's and master's programmes in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Data Science, Public Health, Midwifery Science, and Clinical Psychology, as well as the English-taught Master of Science in Infectious Diseases and One Health (IDOH). Multiple structured PhD programmes are coordinated through the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS). The institution is known for clinical excellence, including one of Germany's largest bone-marrow transplantation facilities and a long-standing emergency helicopter service (Christoph 4).
International students who need preparatory education can apply to the Niedersächsisches Studienkolleg (separate institution, +49 511 762 17690). Applicants from outside the EU apply via uni-assist. Instruction at MHH is predominantly in German; the IDOH master's programme is the primary English-taught offering.

Admissions & fees
What it costs
MHH charges no tuition fees for standard consecutive programmes - neither for EU nor non-EU students. The mandatory semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) for Winter Semester 2026/27 is €407.80, covering student services (€90.00), AStA student union (€16.00), administrative costs (€75.00), and a public-transport semester ticket for regional rail (€226.80). Long-term study fees of €500 per semester apply to students who exceed programme-specific credit limits (e.g. from the 20th semester in Medicine). The IDOH master's programme and the Midwifery master's have separate fee structures - consult the Studierendensekretariat directly.
Admission requirements
International applicants from non-EU countries must apply through uni-assist. The application window for direct study admission is 1 April - 31 May (winter semester only). For Studienkolleg (foundation year), the deadline is 1 April - 15 July (winter semester) or 1 December - 15 January (summer semester). Applicants must hold a school-leaving certificate recognised under anabin (kmk.org) standards. Language proficiency must meet Category A or A+ (per MHH's official language-certificate overview). TestAS (with MINT module, in German) is required for international applicants to medicine-related programmes. Applicants from India, China (mainland, Hong Kong, Macau), and Vietnam must hold a valid APS certificate before the visa application stage; MHH's uni-assist application itself also requires documentary proof of academic credentials per anabin. Only one programme application per person is accepted and no late document submissions are possible; decisions are communicated approximately in late August.
Application deadlines
Non-EU applicants via uni-assist: 1 April - 31 May for direct admission (winter semester only). Studienkolleg: 1 April - 15 July (winter semester), 1 December - 15 January (summer semester). Medicine and Dentistry for EU/German-qualification holders: apply via Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (Hochschulstart) - deadlines set centrally; first semester in winter semester only. Decisions for international applicants communicated approximately late August.
How international applicants apply
Split procedure for Human-/Zahnmedizin 1st Fachsemester (winter intake only). German HZB, EU/EEA-acquired HZB, and foreign HZB acquired in Germany: application via hochschulstart. Non-EU applicants whose HZB was acquired outside the EU/EEA (including after Studienkolleg/FSP): FULL uni-assist procedure, not VPD - uni-assist checks completeness and eligibility and forwards qualifying applications to the MHH Studierendensekretariat, which runs its own selection (Vorauswahl + Auswahlgespraech). Documents required at uni-assist: HZB proofs, German language certificate category A/A+, and TestAS with the subject module 'Mathematik, Informatik und Naturwissenschaften' taken in German. Deadline per Auslaender-Quote selection order (par. 2): online application via uni-assist by 31 May for the winter semester; one programme choice only; re-application via uni-assist after passing the Feststellungspruefung.
Languages of instruction
Instruction is predominantly in German. Most programmes - including Medicine (Staatsexamen), Dentistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Data Science, and Public Health - require German at DSH-2 or higher (C1/C2). The Master of Science in Infectious Diseases and One Health (IDOH) is taught in English. No on-campus preparatory German courses are offered by MHH itself; Leibniz University Hannover provides external German-language preparation options.
Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.

Student accommodation
What Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH) publishes about housing. German universities do not allocate rooms themselves, so the links below are where applications actually go.
Rooms are allocated by
Studentenwerk Hannover
Not by the university. Apply to them directly, and expect a waiting list.
From the university
Student housing is not directly managed by MHH; students typically apply to the Studentenwerk Hannover for subsidised halls of residence.
Campuses & locations
Integrated campus combining university hospital, research institutes, and teaching facilities at Carl-Neuberg-Straße 1, 30625 Hannover. Served by U4 Stadtbahn (stop: Medizinische Hochschule), S-Bahn S3/S6/S7, and bus lines 123, 124, 127, 137.
Living in Hannover
Hannover is the state capital of Lower Saxony with a population of around 540,000. It is a major transport hub in northern Germany with direct ICE rail links to Berlin (1h 40min), Hamburg (1h 10min), and Frankfurt (2h). The city hosts several universities and research institutions, making it a well-established student city. Cost of living is moderate compared to Munich or Hamburg. Hannover is known for its large parks (Herrenhäuser Gärten), annual trade fairs (Hannover Messe, CeBIT successor), and a compact, walkable city centre rebuilt after World War II.
Student life & support
The MHH International Office (Building J1, Level S0, Rooms 1160 & 1170) coordinates ERASMUS+ exchanges, incoming student support, and the IsiEmhh programme - an integration and intercultural orientation programme for first-year students. Staff contacts: Angela Steinhusen (acting director, [email protected], +49 511 532-6026), Anna Buch (ERASMUS+ coordinator, [email protected]), Mareike Hoffmann (international student support, [email protected]). Student housing is not directly managed by MHH; students typically apply to the Studentenwerk Hannover for subsidised halls of residence. The semester ticket included in the Semesterbeitrag covers regional rail travel (S-Bahn and certain RE routes) within the Hannover metropolitan area.
