Living in Bayern
OTH Amberg-Weiden spans two Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz) cities in Bavaria. Amberg (population ~42,000) is a well-preserved medieval town with a compact historic centre, affordable living costs compared to Munich, and good rail connections. Weiden in der Oberpfalz (population ~42,000) is a regional commercial and educational hub close to the Czech border. Both cities offer a quieter, community-oriented student environment with significantly lower rents than major German cities.
Student life & support
The university operates Welcome Centres at both the Amberg and Weiden campuses to support incoming international students across three phases: arrival and study start, ongoing academic progress, and labour market integration. An International Buddy Programme pairs new international students with experienced peers. A Language Centre at both sites offers German courses at multiple levels (UNIcert®) and arranges DAAD language test appointments. Campus amenities include a Mensa (canteen), library, sports and fitness facilities, a university choir, and a student cinema. Student accommodation is available through a Roomfinder/Marketplace tool on the university portal; the International Office can advise on housing options.
