Admissions & fees

What it costs

RPTU is a public university in Rhineland-Palatinate. There are no general tuition fees for EU and non-EU students. Students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covering administrative costs and the semester transport ticket (Deutschland-Semesterticket); the exact amount is confirmed at enrolment but is not published as a fixed figure on the public website. Rhineland-Palatinate does not impose the non-EU tuition surcharge that Baden-Württemberg charges.

Admission requirements

International applicants must hold a university entrance qualification equivalent to the German Abitur. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam are required to submit the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in their respective country. German language proficiency must be demonstrated: applicants need at least B1 German to apply; enrolment in German-taught programmes requires DSH-2 or DSH-3 (or equivalent). For English-taught master's programmes, IELTS/TOEFL scores are accepted in lieu of German language certificates - specific thresholds vary by programme. Applications from non-EU international students are processed through the RPTU portal or via uni-assist (Landau campus). An evaluation fee of €60 applies at the Kaiserslautern campus.

Application deadlines

Winter semester (October start): restricted-admission programmes - 15 July (EU/German applicants); open-admission programmes - 15 September (Kaiserslautern), 15 September (Landau); non-EU applicants at Landau - 15 June for restricted, 15 July for open. Summer semester (April start): deadlines are three months earlier (15 January for restricted; 15 March for open). International English-taught master's and PhD programmes have separate deadlines published per programme on the RPTU international pages.

How international applicants apply

SPLIT BY CAMPUS. Kaiserslautern campus: NO uni-assist - applicants with foreign certificates apply directly via RPTU's own application portal (studium.rptu.de, international master applications handled by ISGS) and pay a 60.00 EUR assessment fee charged by the university for verifying foreign qualifications. Landau campus: FULL uni-assist - applicants whose higher education entrance qualification was not obtained at a German school apply through the uni-assist portal 'My assist' (processing fee 75.00 EUR for the first choice of study, 30.00 EUR for each additional); applicants already checked once by uni-assist, Studienkolleg graduates and European Baccalaureate holders instead apply directly at studium.rptu.de and attach their uni-assist VPD. The Landau application is only considered once all documents and the uni-assist fee have arrived on time.

Languages of instruction

The majority of bachelor's programmes are taught in German. English-taught master's programmes are available at both campuses, covering fields such as Advanced Quantum Physics, Automation & Control, Embedded Computing Systems, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics for Technology and Data Science, and others. German language proficiency (DSH-2 or DSH-3) is required for German-taught programmes; B1 is needed to apply, with higher certification required for enrolment.

Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.
