Admissions & fees

What it costs

THWS is a public university of applied sciences in Bavaria. Most programmes carry no tuition fees beyond the statutory semester contribution. Note: Bavaria introduced tuition fees for non-EU/non-EEA international students from Winter Semester 2025/26 - prospective applicants should verify the current fee schedule directly with THWS, as amounts and programme-level exemptions may apply. Some advanced or online master's programmes are subject to programme-specific study fees. The semester contribution covers student services (Studentenwerk) including canteen access and public transport discounts; the exact amount should be confirmed at the time of enrolment via the THWS re-enrolment pages.

Admission requirements

International applicants whose qualifications were obtained abroad are generally required to submit a Preliminary Review Documentation (VPD) issued by uni-assist e.V. as a mandatory part of the application. Applications are submitted via the THWS CampusPortal (campusportal.thws.de). Entry qualifications must be recognised as equivalent to a German Fachhochschulreife (advanced technical college certificate) or Abitur. Language entrance requirements vary by programme: German-taught programmes require proof of German language proficiency (typically B2/C1 level or equivalent); English-taught programmes require proof of English proficiency. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must additionally obtain an APS certificate from the relevant German embassy before applying. Architecture and Communication Design require a portfolio submission and qualification test. Specific language level requirements by programme are listed on the THWS website under Language entrance requirements by programme.

Application deadlines

Winter Semester (starts ~1 October): English-taught non-restricted programmes: 1 April - 15 June; all other programmes: 1 May - 15 July. Exceptions: Communication Design deadline 31 May; Architecture deadline 8 July; Master's Electrical Engineering deadline 15 June. Summer Semester (starts ~15 March): English-taught non-restricted programmes: 15 October - 15 December; all other programmes: 15 November - 15 January. Deadlines are confirmed via the THWS CampusPortal (campusportal.thws.de).

How international applicants apply

Used for VPD only. Applicants whose school/university certificates were not obtained in Germany must generally have them pre-reviewed by uni-assist e.V. (Vorpruefungsdokumentation, VPD); the VPD is a mandatory part of the application documents. The actual admission application is nevertheless submitted separately, form- and deadline-compliant, through THWS's own online portal (THWS CampusPortal). Listed on the uni-assist member list.

Languages of instruction

The majority of programmes are taught in German. THWS offers 15 English-taught degree programmes: 9 English-taught bachelor's programmes (including Applied Mathematics, Applied Polymer Engineering, Business and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics) and 6 English-taught master's programmes (including Artificial Intelligence, Business and Engineering, International Business with Regional Focus, International Social Work with Refugees and Migrants, Managing Global Dynamics, Transformation). Some programmes are delivered in a hybrid/partly English format. German language courses are available on campus through the Campus for Language Proficiency.

Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.
