About Universität Regensburg
Universität Regensburg (University of Regensburg) was founded in 1962 and has grown from a regional institution into an internationally oriented centre for research and teaching. It is organised across twelve faculties covering a broad spectrum of disciplines, with four strategic research profiles: Dynamics in the Global World, Material Worlds and Sustainability, Digital Transformations, and Integrated Sciences in Life, Health, and Disease.
As of winter semester 2025/26 the university enrolled 19,437 students, of whom 1,512 are international students from over 100 countries. The university operates a compact, purpose-built campus on the southern edge of Regensburg's UNESCO-listed medieval old city, which keeps all faculties and student services within easy reach.
The university maintains a strong internationalization agenda with over 360 partner institutions worldwide and offers degree programmes in both German and English, including a growing number of English-taught master's programmes. The International Office and Welcome Centre provide dedicated support for incoming international students and visiting researchers.

Admissions & costs
Tuition & fees
Universität Regensburg is a Bavarian public university. Tuition is not charged for the standard duration of study. Students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) each semester covering administrative fees and student services; the current amount is not published on the pages accessible during this research — check the Registrar's Office ([email protected]) for the current figure. Note: Bavaria introduced tuition fees of €3,000 per semester for non-EU/non-EEA international students from winter semester 2025/26 under the Bayerisches Hochschulgesetz amendment; verify the applicable figure directly with the university before applying.
Admission requirements
International applicants with foreign school-leaving or higher-education certificates must apply directly to the university (not via hochschulstart.de). Entry qualification requirements depend on the home country's recognition status under the KMK anabin database. For master's programmes an accredited bachelor's degree in a related field is required; individual faculties set their own GPA and subject-match thresholds. Language of instruction determines the proficiency requirement: German-taught programmes typically require TestDaF TDN 4, DSH-2, or equivalent; English-taught programmes require proof of English proficiency (usually IELTS or TOEFL). Applicants from India, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and Vietnam must hold a valid APS certificate issued by the German embassy in their home country before a student visa can be issued. The International Office ([email protected]) advises on individual qualification recognition.
Application deadlines
For exchange/Erasmus students: winter semester — applications 1 April to 15 May (partner nomination by 1 May); summer semester — applications 1 September to 15 November (partner nomination by 1 November). Application deadlines for degree-seeking international students are programme-dependent and not centrally published on the official pages reviewed; applicants should contact the International Office or the relevant faculty directly.
Languages of instruction
The primary language of instruction is German. A selection of bachelor's and master's programmes is offered in English or bilingually (German/English). The university's programme finder lists 91 accredited programmes across bachelor's, master's, and state-examination levels. Incoming international students can attend the Intensive German Language Course (ILC) run by the Language Centre (ZSK) at levels A1 through B2 before the semester begins.

Living in Bayern
Regensburg is a city of approximately 160,000 inhabitants in eastern Bavaria, situated at the confluence of the Danube and Regen rivers roughly 100 km north-east of Munich. Its medieval old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it one of the best-preserved historic city centres in Germany. The city has a well-developed public transport network, a low cost of living relative to Munich, and a lively student culture driven by its roughly 30,000 students across multiple higher-education institutions.
Student life & support
The International Office provides dedicated advising for degree-seeking international students and coordinates orientation programmes. The Welcome Centre is the central point of contact for non-academic questions, offering accommodation assistance (both university-arranged and privately sourced housing), visa and residence permit guidance, and family support services. The university Language Centre (ZSK) offers the Intensive German Language Course (ILC) in eight levels (A1.1–B2.2) in the weeks before each semester, as well as regular semester courses. The student union (Studentenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz) manages affordable canteen (Mensa) facilities and student accommodation on or near campus.
