Admissions & costs
Tuition & fees
UE is a private Fachhochschule and charges tuition for all students regardless of nationality. Bachelor's programme tuition starts from approximately €1,110 per month. Master's programme tuition ranges from approximately €1,046 to €1,188 per month depending on duration (120, 90, or 60 ECTS). MBA programmes range from approximately €1,101 to €1,235 per month. Foundation courses cost €12,500 (9 months) or €14,600 per year (12 months). An annual technology fee of €89 and a mandatory semester public-transport ticket (€185–€205 depending on location) apply. An instalment plan carries an additional fee of €250 per semester. Scholarships and merit-based reductions are available; GUS-affiliate and alumni discounts of up to 50% on some fees exist. Financing options include KfW loans, GlobCred (available for applicants from India, Nigeria, Kenya, Brazil, and South Africa), and Flywire/TransferMate international payment services.
Admission requirements
Bachelor's applicants must hold a recognised secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur or international equivalent), officially translated into English or German. Alternatively, three or more years of relevant professional experience may satisfy the entry requirement. Art & Design applicants (non-EU) must also submit a portfolio and complete an admissions essay. Master's applicants must hold a completed bachelor's degree with transcripts; a study-related apprenticeship plus two years of professional experience may also qualify for certain programmes. English proficiency: B2 (CEFR) required for English-taught programmes. German proficiency: TestDaF TDN 4 or DSH 2 for German-taught programmes. Note for Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants: UE is a private Fachhochschule. APS certificate requirements follow German federal rules — applicants from India, China (mainland, HK, Macau), and Vietnam should verify APS obligations directly with the German embassy and with UE's admissions team, as the university did not publish explicit APS guidance on its official site at the time of data collection. Non-EU applicants must pay a non-refundable reservation fee of at least €1,500 (credited toward total programme cost). If a visa is delayed, UE allows the first semester to be started online; students must be on campus by the second semester.
Application deadlines
Winter semester: 1 September. Summer semester: 28 February. Guest/exchange students: 1 June (winter) and 1 December (summer).
Languages of instruction
Most programmes at the Hamburg campus and across German locations are taught in English. German-taught programmes are also available at other campuses. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate B2 (CEFR); non-native German speakers require TestDaF 4 or DSH 2 for German-taught programmes.
