About Hochschule Anhalt - Anhalt University of Applied Sciences

Hochschule Anhalt (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences) is a state-funded university of applied sciences in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, with approximately 7,100 enrolled students across three campuses in Köthen, Bernburg, and Dessau-Roßlau. The university organises its teaching across seven academic departments covering agriculture, economics, architecture, design, computer science, engineering, and applied biosciences.

The institution places strong emphasis on practice-oriented education delivered in small study groups, with direct industry linkage and access to applied research laboratories. It hosts around 2,500 international students — roughly 35% of its total enrolment — and offers 16 degree programmes taught in English, primarily at master's level, alongside a substantial German-taught portfolio of over 80 bachelor's and master's programmes.

As a Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences), Hochschule Anhalt does not award doctoral degrees directly but facilitates doctorates through cooperative arrangements with research universities via its Graduate and Doctoral Centre.

Around 2,500 international students — approximately 35% of total enrolment — making it one of Germany's more internationally diverse universities of applied sciences.

16 English-taught degree programmes, primarily at master's level, covering engineering, architecture, business, and food systems.

Three geographically distinct campuses (Köthen, Bernburg, Dessau), each with a different disciplinary focus, all in Sachsen-Anhalt.

Dessau campus is located in the city most associated with the Bauhaus movement, a significant draw for architecture and design students.

International applicants with qualifications not directly qualifying for German university entry can attend the university's own Studienkolleg (State Study College) in Köthen.

Sachsen-Anhalt charges no non-EU tuition fees; cost of living in these smaller cities is significantly lower than Munich or Berlin.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

Hochschule Anhalt is a public university in Sachsen-Anhalt. There are no general tuition fees for bachelor's and consecutive master's programmes regardless of nationality — Sachsen-Anhalt has not introduced non-EU student fees. Students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covering student services and the semester ticket; the exact amount is published per programme page. A supplementary fee of €250 per semester may apply if a student is pursuing a second degree at the same level as one already completed. Some non-consecutive/continuing-education master's programmes may carry their own programme-specific fees.

Admission requirements

International applicants whose qualifications originate outside Germany must apply through uni-assist (my.uni-assist.de) unless they hold a Studienkolleg FSP qualification or ZAB/KMK recognition, in which case they apply directly via the university's SSC portal. Entry qualification is assessed against the anabin database; applicants whose home-country school certificate does not directly qualify for a German bachelor's programme are referred to the university's own Studienkolleg (State Study College). For German-taught programmes: DSH level 2 or TestDaF TDN 4 in all four sub-tests is required. For English-taught programmes: IELTS, TOEFL, TELC, or PTE are accepted (exact band thresholds are stated per programme). Indian applicants: the APS certificate is mandatory for applicants whose prior qualification is from India, and must be submitted as part of the uni-assist application. A completed first year of a recognised Indian bachelor's (from an anabin H+ institution) in the relevant subject may enable direct bachelor's admission; otherwise the Studienkolleg pathway applies. Chinese and Vietnamese applicants are also subject to APS requirements per German consulate rules. Specific application deadlines are published on each programme's own page rather than centrally; applicants should check individual programme pages or contact the International Office.

Application deadlines

Specific deadlines are not published centrally and are listed on each individual programme page. Applicants should check the programme page directly or contact the International Office. As a general guide for German universities of applied sciences: Winter Semester (October start) applications via uni-assist typically close in June–July; Summer Semester (April start) applications typically close in January. Confirm current deadlines on each programme's page or with the university.

Languages of instruction

The majority of degree programmes are taught in German. Sixteen programmes are available fully in English, concentrated at master's level — including MSc Biomedical Engineering, MEng Electrical and Computer Engineering, MSc Photovoltaics Engineering Science, MSc Sustainable Food Systems Engineering Technology and Business, BA International Business, and MBA International Trade, among others. German-taught programmes require DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4 (all four sub-tests). English-taught programmes accept IELTS, TOEFL, TELC, or PTE at levels stated by individual programmes.

Living in Sachsen-Anhalt

Köthen (Anhalt), the main campus city, is a historic town of approximately 24,000 residents in Sachsen-Anhalt, central Germany. It is known as the 'Bach City' because Johann Sebastian Bach served as court bandmaster here (1717–1723), and as the birthplace of modern homeopathy, where Samuel Hahnemann founded the practice. The city offers affordable student housing, a compact layout, and access to leisure facilities including the nearby Edderitz natural beach. The Bernburg campus sits in a town of around 35,000 on the Saale River, notable for its castle and art nouveau architecture. The Dessau campus is in Dessau-Roßlau (population ~83,000), internationally recognised as the city most closely associated with the Bauhaus movement and home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Student life & support

The International Office, based at the Köthen campus with staff serving all three locations, coordinates support for incoming international students including visa guidance, accommodation assistance, and orientation. A buddy programme pairs international newcomers with experienced students. The university's Language Centre (Sprachenzentrum) offers German language courses for international students. Student housing is managed by Studentenwerk Halle and is available at all three campuses; Bernburg campus rooms are noted for particularly affordable rents (basic rent ~€4.44/sqm). Each campus maintains sports facilities, and Köthen has an active student club. The Dessau campus features nine specialist design and art workshops for hands-on project work.
