About Hochschule der Polizei des Landes Brandenburg
Hochschule der Polizei des Landes Brandenburg (HPol BB) is the central training and education institution for all police officers in the state of Brandenburg. Located on a modern campus in Oranienburg, it provides initial training, degree-level study, and continuing professional education for the entire Brandenburg police force.
The university offers a 2.5-year training programme for the middle police service, an accredited three-year Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A. Polizeivollzugsdienst/Police Service) for the higher police service, and postgraduate programmes including a Master in Criminology (since October 2020) and a Master in Public Administration Police Management in cooperation with the Berlin School of Economics and Law. Research is conducted through its Police Science Institute and Cybercriminology Institute.
The campus in Oranienburg, completed in 2006, occupies a former SS military facility adjacent to the Sachsenhausen memorial site. Facilities include lecture halls, a library, a training police station, a shooting range, sports halls, and a traffic training area. The institution participates in ERASMUS+ and maintains partnerships with police schools in Poland and other European countries through its International Centre.

What it costs
No tuition fees. As a state police academy, all study and training programmes are tuition-free for admitted civil servant candidates. Trainees and students receive a monthly salary/allowance (Anwärterbezüge) from the state of Brandenburg during their studies.
Admission requirements
Admission is restricted to candidates applying to serve as police civil servants in Brandenburg; open to German citizens and, in specific pathways, applicants from Poland (EU). The institution does not admit international students outside of ERASMUS+ exchange or official police cooperation frameworks. Autumn intake (Herbsteinstellung): training and study begin 1 October. Application deadline for 2026 autumn intake was 31 May 2026. Candidates apply via the Brandenburg police recruitment portal (polizei-brandenburg-karriere.de). No APS certificate pathway applies as the institution does not admit international bachelor's/master's applicants through the standard higher-education route.

How international applicants apply
Not applicable - restricted police recruitment. The Hochschule der Polizei des Landes Brandenburg does not appear on the uni-assist member list and admits no students through a university application: study places in the B.A. Polizeivollzugsdienst are tied to being hired as a police trainee by the Brandenburg police. Applications go exclusively through the career portal polizei-brandenburg-karriere.de and the police selection procedure (Auswahldienst). Official Einstellungsvoraussetzungen require, among others: German citizenship under Art. 116 of the Grundgesetz or other EU citizenship (the Interior Ministry may grant exceptions only for urgent operational need), Fachhochschulreife/Abitur or recognised equivalent, good German in word and writing, German swimming badge Bronze, age under 36 at hiring, and commitment to the free democratic order. No uni-assist, no VPD, no international degree-seeker route; internationals cannot apply.

Living in Oranienburg
Oranienburg is a city of approximately 45,000 residents located around 35 km north of Berlin in the state of Brandenburg. It is well connected to Berlin by regional rail and road. The city is home to the Oranienburg Palace (Schloss Oranienburg), a Baroque landmark, and the Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial site. Daily life is affordable compared to Berlin, with private housing available on the rental market; the city has no dedicated student dormitories.

Over 1,000 trainees and students are enrolled simultaneously in the 2.5-year training or 3-year degree programmes. The campus provides sports facilities, a shooting range, and a judo/sports hall, reflecting the physical training component of police education. The institution has an active social-media presence and holds an annual open-house day (Tag der offenen Tür).
