Living in Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a historic university city on the Neckar River in Baden-Württemberg, best known for its baroque old town, the romantic ruins of Heidelberg Castle, and the Old Bridge. It has one of Germany's oldest universities (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, founded 1386) and a strong international atmosphere. The city is compact and highly walkable, with excellent public transport connections to Frankfurt (approx. 1 hour by train) and Mannheim. Student costs are moderate by German city standards.

Student life & support

The Heidelberg campus offers a close-knit environment within a vibrant student city. Students benefit from the AStA student government, Erasmus+ exchange opportunities, and HSF StudyPlus short programmes (3-14 days) at partner institutions in New York, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, London, Dublin, and Barcelona. The surrounding city provides cafés, bars, clubs, riverside walks along the Neckar, and the Philosopher's Walk hiking trail.
