About Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften Coburg
Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften Coburg (Coburg University of Applied Sciences) traces its origins to 1814, when Friedrich Streib founded a private school for civic architecture. It became a state university of applied sciences in 1971 and adopted its current name in 2007. As of Summer Semester 2026, the university enrols 4,193 students across 6 faculties plus a continuing education division, offering 30 bachelor's and 20 master's degree programmes in engineering, natural sciences, health, design, social work, and economics.
The university maintains partnerships with over 90 universities worldwide and holds an Erasmus Charter (2021-2027). Admissions & fees
What it costs
Hochschule Coburg is a public Bavarian university. All students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covering the student union and public transport; the exact amount is published each semester. From Summer Semester 2025, non-EU/EEA students enrolling in six selected English-language programmes are subject to additional tuition fees: Autonomous Driving (Master), Automation and Robotics (Bachelor), Digital Business Models and Technologies (Bachelor), Electrical Engineering for Sustainable and Renewable Energy (Bachelor), Engineering Physics (Bachelor), and Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor). The fee amount varies by programme and is published on each programme's individual page. Non-EU students who enrolled before Summer Semester 2025 and are continuing their programme are exempt. All other programmes remain tuition-free for non-EU students beyond the standard semester contribution.
Admission requirements
International applicants with foreign qualifications must submit a credential evaluation: either a Preliminary Examination Documentation (VPD) from uni-assist, a ZAB/KMK certificate, or - for applicants from India, China, or Vietnam - an APS certificate. The APS certificate is mandatory for these nationalities and must be obtained before applying. Most bachelor's programmes have no Numerus Clausus (NC); design programmes require an aptitude test. For German-taught programmes, a German language certificate at B2 level (CEFR) is required by the time of enrolment; accepted tests include TestDaF (TDN 3 minimum), DSH-1, Goethe B2, telc B2, or DSD II. For English-taught programmes, B2 in English is required: IELTS 5.5+, TOEFL iBT 72+, or PTE Academic 59+. Applications are submitted via the PRIMUSS online portal.
Application deadlines
Specific semester application deadlines are managed via the PRIMUSS online portal and are not comprehensively published on the website. Fee-exemption deadlines for non-EU students are: winter semester enrolment by 15 August, summer semester enrolment by 1 February. International applicants should allow 4-6 weeks for uni-assist VPD processing and check the PRIMUSS portal for current programme-specific deadlines.
How international applicants apply
VPD via uni-assist - applicants with a foreign degree must obtain the Preliminary Review Documentation (VPD) from uni-assist e.V. (certificate evaluation, possible year-round, ~4-6 weeks; VPD must be issued to Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts and is valid 1 year) and apply to Coburg via its own application portal at the same time. VPD is explicitly required for Electrical and Information Technology (M.Eng.) and Social Work (M.A.), and for IB diploma holders.
Languages of instruction
The majority of bachelor's and master's programmes are taught in German. A number of master's programmes are offered in English, including those in engineering and design fields (e.g. Autonomous Driving, Additive Manufacturing). The Language Centre (Studium Generale) offers courses in English (B1-C1), Spanish, French, and additional languages via the Virtual University of Bavaria (vhb) at no extra charge. German language instruction for international students is available on campus.

Living in Coburg
Coburg is a medium-sized town in Upper Franconia, northern Bavaria, with a population of approximately 41,000. It is known for its well-preserved Renaissance Coburg Fortress (Veste Coburg), the Ehrenburg Palace, and as a former ducal residence. The city hosts the world's second-largest Samba Festival. Living costs are significantly lower than Munich or Frankfurt. Coburg has direct rail connections to Nuremberg (~1 hour) and Munich (~2 hours), making larger cities easily accessible.

University sports and professional sports events (HSC Coburg handball, BBC Coburg basketball) are available at student rates.
