About HAW Weihenstephan-Triesdorf
Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften Weihenstephan-Triesdorf (HSWT) is a public university of applied sciences in Bavaria, established in 1971. It specialises exclusively in life sciences, agriculture, horticulture, landscape architecture, environmental engineering, forestry, and bioengineering - making it one of the most focused "green" universities of applied sciences in Germany. With around 5,747 enrolled students across two campuses, it operates at a manageable scale that supports close faculty-student contact.
HSWT operates seven departments spread across its Weihenstephan campus in Freising (near Munich) and its Triesdorf campus in Weidenbach (Middle Franconia). Admissions & fees
What it costs
As a Bavarian public university of applied sciences, HSWT does not charge tuition fees in the traditional sense. Students pay a mandatory semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) each semester; exact amounts are published on the university's fees page and include a regional public transport component (the 38-Euro-Ticket scheme). Bavaria introduced non-EU tuition fees from WS 2025/26 - prospective non-EU applicants should verify the current non-EU semester fee on the official HSWT fees page before applying, as amounts were not published in full on the pages reviewed.
Admission requirements
International applicants with non-German qualifications must submit a Preliminary Review Documentation (VPD) through uni-assist for most master's programmes (waived only for Agricultural Management and International Agricultural Management). Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must first obtain an APS certificate from the relevant German embassy Academic Evaluation Centre before the uni-assist review. German-taught programmes require proof of German at B2 level (Goethe-Zertifikat, TestDaF, DSH, or equivalent, valid within 2 years of issue). English-taught programmes require English B2 or higher; accepted certificates include IELTS (minimum 5.5 overall), TOEFL iBT, Cambridge B2 First, and TELC B2. Students must demonstrate monthly funding of at least €992 (e.g. via a blocked account). Application is submitted via the HSWT online portal; restricted-admission bachelor's programmes additionally require registration on hochschulstart.de.

How international applicants apply
uni-assist VPD required: applicants with foreign certificates must submit a preliminary review documentation (VPD) from uni-assist for ALL bachelor's programmes and for all master's programmes except Agricultural Management (Weihenstephan) and the International Master's Programme in Agricultural Management (Triesdorf), which waive the VPD. The VPD is applied for year-round in the uni-assist My assist portal (select HSWT, upload school-leaving and any university certificates; APS certificate additionally required for applicants from India, China and Vietnam), takes about 4-6 weeks, and must then be submitted together with the online application in HSWT's own application portal - a mere uni-assist examination report or a VPD issued for another university is not accepted. Bachelor applicants exempt from the VPD: German-regulation Abitur obtained at a school abroad, gemischtsprachiges IB, European Baccalaureate, and holders of a passed Studienkolleg assessment examination. Languages of instruction
Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German (B2 level required). Ten of the 17 master's programmes are taught in English, including Climate Change Management, International Master of Landscape Architecture, Farm Management, Digital Farming, Resilient Horticulture, Sustainable Regional Development, and International Environmental Engineering. One bachelor's programme (Applied Informatics) is also English-taught. The Language Centre at both campuses offers German-as-a-foreign-language courses across CEFR levels for enrolled international students.

Living in Freising
The main campus is located in Freising, a historic Bavarian town of around 50,000 residents situated approximately 35 km north of Munich and adjacent to Munich Airport (MUC). Freising is well connected to Munich by S-Bahn (S1 line, ~40 minutes). The town has a medieval old town, a cathedral hill, and a lively student scene bolstered by HSWT and the Technical University of Munich's Weihenstephan campus, which sits nearby. The Triesdorf campus is in rural Weidenbach in Middle Franconia, roughly 80 km south of Nuremberg - a quieter agricultural-research environment.
Student life & support
The International Office Welcome Centre is located in Building C4 on the Weihenstephan campus and provides year-round support to incoming international students, including orientation, visa guidance, and scholarship information. Housing for Weihenstephan campus students can be sought through Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern, which administers student residence halls. The Language Centre at both campuses offers German-as-a-foreign-language courses for international students following the CEFR framework. The university runs a Career Service offering workshops and application coaching, and maintains a Green Office focused on sustainability. Student government bodies and various working groups are active on both campuses.
