Admissions & fees

What it costs

HTW Berlin charges no tuition fees for standard Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes, in line with Berlin state policy for all students regardless of nationality. The semester contribution for Winter Semester 2026 is €375.30 for on-campus students, covering administration (€50.00), student body contribution (€12.50), Studierendenwerk Berlin (€85.00), and a public-transport semester ticket (€226.80). Exchange students pay a reduced fee of €325.30 per semester.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's applicants need a recognised higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung). International applicants whose qualifications are not from a German-speaking country must submit a recognised German or English language certificate. Some programmes have a numerus clausus (NC); design and culture programmes additionally require an aptitude test. Applicants from India, China (incl. Hong Kong and Macau), and Vietnam are required to hold an APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) before applying - this is a mandatory German government requirement, not specific to HTW Berlin. International school-leaving qualifications are assessed against the anabin database; qualifications rated H− may require completion of a Studienkolleg (preparatory foundation year). Master's applicants need a first academic degree in a relevant subject. Language requirements apply depending on the programme's language of instruction (see Languages section).

Application deadlines

HTW Berlin uses an online application portal. Enrollment deadlines (after receiving an admission notice) are 1 April for the summer semester and 1 October for the winter semester. Degree programmes begin on 15 April / 15 October (German-taught) or 30 April / 30 October (English-taught). Specific application submission deadlines for each programme are published in the HTW Berlin application portal; applicants receive an admission or rejection notice approximately four weeks after the deadline.

How international applicants apply

Used - full processing by uni-assist (application forwarded to HTW Berlin, not VPD-only). Applicants who are neither EU nor EEA citizens AND obtained their higher education entrance qualification or first academic degree outside Germany must apply via uni-assist (My assist): uni-assist checks the documents against HTW Berlin's criteria and those of the KMK and, if all requirements are met, forwards the application to HTW Berlin, which makes the final admission decision. Restricted-admission Bachelor programmes additionally require prior registration with hochschulstart.de (DoSV) before applying in uni-assist. EU/EEA citizens and holders of German qualifications apply directly via the HTW application portal instead. Deadlines differ by route (e.g. restricted Bachelor winter semester: 01.05.-30.06. via uni-assist vs 15.05.-15.07. via the HTW portal; restricted Master summer semester: 01.05.-15.06. both routes). HTW Berlin appears on the official uni-assist member list for both campuses (Treskowallee and Wilhelminenhof).

Languages of instruction

Most Bachelor's programmes are taught in German. A growing number of Master's programmes are offered in English. For German-taught programmes, applicants must hold DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4 (all four components). English-taught programmes require IELTS Academic 7.0, TOEFL iBT 95-113, or PTE Academic 76. HTW Berlin also operates a Foreign Languages Centre offering German and other language courses to enrolled students.

Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.
