About Hochschule Stralsund
Hochschule Stralsund (HOST) — known in English as Stralsund University of Applied Sciences — is a compact, campus-based Fachhochschule in the Baltic Sea city of Stralsund, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It describes itself as the north-easternmost university in Germany and has a clearly defined technical-economic profile, covering electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, and business/economics across three faculties.
With approximately 1,800 enrolled students and representation from around 49 nationalities, HOST offers a notably international atmosphere for its size. The university emphasises small-group tuition, strong supervision ratios, and close ties with regional and national industry partners. All degree programmes at HOST are admission-free (kein Numerus Clausus), meaning applicants who meet the formal entry requirements are guaranteed a place.
HOST holds a family-friendly university certification and is a member of the national Zukunftsforum klimafreundliche Hochschulen initiative. Its alumni base has grown to over 11,600 since the first graduates in 1993, and the university maintains active double-degree and exchange partnerships, particularly with Baltic and Eastern European institutions.

Living in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Stralsund is a Hanseatic city of around 59,000 inhabitants on the Baltic Sea coast, whose medieval Old Town — renowned for its Brick Gothic architecture — was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The city offers short distances, direct motorway access, and a bridge connection to Rügen, Germany's largest island with 60 km of beaches. The compact size and coastal setting make it popular with students seeking an affordable, historically rich environment away from large-city pressures.
Student life & support
Campus life at HOST is shaped by its small size: students benefit from direct access to lecturers and a tight-knit community. An international buddy programme pairs incoming students with local volunteers to help with arrival, enrolment, and integration. Campus accommodation starts at approximately €236/month. Canteen meals begin at €1.75. Monthly health insurance for students under 30 runs approximately €100. The university library offers 179 workspaces across 1,800 m². Stralsund's cultural calendar includes the Wallenstein Days (July), Long Night of Open Monuments (September), and the Rügen Bridge Marathon (October), alongside easy access to island beaches and nature reserves.
