What it costs
No tuition fees are charged for degree programmes. Students pay a semester contribution of approximately €137.50 (new students) or €112.50 (continuing students) per semester. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern does not levy additional non-EU surcharges (unlike Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria). Estimated monthly living costs are approximately €934, covering accommodation, food, health insurance, and utilities. A blocked account (Sperrkonto) demonstrating at least €670/month (€8,040/year) is required for the visa application; note that the federal minimum was updated to €992/month (€11,904/year) as of 2024 - verify the current figure with the International Office before applying.
Admission requirements
International applicants must hold a recognised higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung). For German-taught programmes, German at DSH-2, TestDaF TDN 4, or telc C1 is required. For English-taught programmes, accepted proof includes TOEFL iBT 80+, IELTS 6.0, or Duolingo 110. Master's programmes typically require a relevant bachelor's degree with 210+ ECTS and a German grade average of 2.0-2.5. Non-EU applicants for the International Management and Operation and Management of Maritime Systems master's must apply via uni-assist (fee: €75 first university, €30 each additional). APS certificate is required for applicants from India, China (incl. HK/Macau), and Vietnam before a student visa can be issued - Hochschule Wismar does not waive this federal requirement. Design-faculty applicants must also register for an aptitude test by 30 April.
Application deadlines
Winter semester (October start): application portal opens 1 May; deadline 15 July. Summer semester (April start): deadline 15 January. Exception: MA Architectural Lighting Design has its own annual deadline of 1 May and admits students once per year only.
How international applicants apply
Selective uni-assist: non-EU applicants without a German university entrance certificate and without a completed degree at a German higher-education institution must apply via UNI-ASSIST only for the two English-taught Master's programmes 'International Management' and 'Operation and Management of Maritime Systems' (uni-assist fee EUR 75 first university / EUR 30 each additional). All other applications - including design Bachelor aptitude-test applications - go through HS Wismar's own Bewerberportal. Listed as a uni-assist member university.
Languages of instruction
Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German (DSH-2 / TestDaF TDN 4 / telc C1 required). Six master's programmes are delivered entirely in English: Architecture, Architectural Lighting Design, German and International Commercial Law, Information and Electrical Engineering, International Management, and Operation and Management of Maritime Systems. German language proficiency is stated as 'not necessary' for English-taught tracks. The university's Language Centre offers German courses for international students.
Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.
