Living in Wismar

Wismar is a small historic port city of approximately 45,000 inhabitants on the Baltic Sea in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Its well-preserved medieval old town (Altstadt) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city offers a compact, affordable cost of living compared to larger German university cities. Rostock, the state's largest city, is about 45 km away and reachable by regional train in under an hour.

Student life & support

The Studierendenwerk Rostock-Wismar manages student housing, offering furnished rooms in shared-facility residential halls (one-semester lease agreements). Shared apartments (WGs) are also common, with rents typically €300-400 per month per person. International students receive priority consideration for university housing. The International Office (open Tue/Thu 09:00-12:00 & 13:00-15:00, Wed 09:00-12:00) provides counselling on visa, finances, and integration. The Language Centre runs German language courses. Campus facilities include a sports centre, library, and the StartupYard makerspace.
