About Internationale Berufsakademie Darmstadt

The iba | Internationale Berufsakademie is Germany's largest state-recognised cooperative academy (Berufsakademie), headquartered in Darmstadt and operating 12 physical study locations across Germany plus a virtual campus. Founded in 2006 as a cooperation between the F+U corporate group and BA Nordhessen, the iba offers exclusively dual-study (duales Studium) bachelor's programmes that combine two days per week of campus instruction with up to three days of practical workplace training at a partner company.

Programmes are organised across three faculties: Management (over 20 business administration specialisations including Digital Business, Finance, Marketing, Logistics, and Tourism), Social Work (Social Work & Management), and Health (Applied Therapy Sciences covering Physiotherapy and Ergotherapy). All programmes lead to a state-recognised bachelor's degree, are accredited, and carry no numerus clausus (NC) restriction. The institution is supervised by the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art (HMWK) and holds permanent state recognition under Hessian law.

The Darmstadt campus is the founding and headquarters location, situated near the main railway station at Poststraße 4–6. With more than 3,500 students enrolled network-wide, over 7,000 partner companies, and a reported 90%+ employment transfer rate into partner firms after graduation, the iba positions itself as a practice-led alternative to traditional Fachhochschule or university study.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

Dual study programmes: €0/month tuition — the partner company covers fees entirely and typically pays students a monthly salary of approximately €200–€500 (varies by employer and programme; Physiotherapy/Ergotherapy therapy-track students receive no salary in semesters 1–6). Full-time programmes: €679/month. International Year One (preparatory): €489/month. All programmes are at a private, state-recognised institution; there is no public-university tuition-free status. Baden-Württemberg non-EU surcharge does not apply (iba Darmstadt is in Hessen). A one-time €200 HZB evaluation fee applies for international applicants.

Admission requirements

International applicants must hold a recognised higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) from their home country. Three entry pathways exist: (1) Dual Study — requires a recognised HZB, C1 German (or DSD II), B1 English, a valid German student visa, and a blocked bank account of at least €8,500; the practical partner company must also be secured before enrolment. (2) Full-Time Study — same language and visa requirements as dual study (C1 German, B1 English, €8,500 blocked account). (3) International Year One (preparatory/Studienkolleg-equivalent) — requires a home-country HZB, A2 German, B2 English (no certificate required), valid student visa, and €8,500 blocked account. APS certificate: The iba's own admission pages do not mention the APS requirement, but Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants are required by German consular regulations to obtain an APS certificate before applying for a student visa regardless of the institution. Indian applicants with Class XII ≥70% qualify for APS. The iba's International Office should be contacted to confirm whether APS is required at the application stage or only at visa stage. Application begins via the iba-Career portal to secure a dual-study practice partner, or directly via the international office for full-time and preparatory tracks. A one-time €200 qualification evaluation fee applies for international applicants (charged by the Hessian Ministry).

Application deadlines

Dual study intakes begin twice per year: 1 April and 1 October. Specific application deadlines are not published on the official website; applicants are directed to the iba-Career portal to secure a partner company placement, which effectively determines the intake date. International applicants should allow additional lead time for visa processing (4–10 weeks for India) and APS certificate (approximately 4 weeks for Indian applicants).

Languages of instruction

German is the primary language of instruction for all regular programmes. An International Year One preparatory programme and select full-time programmes are available in English as a parallel track; dual-study programmes require C1 German. Weekly information sessions are held in German, English, Spanish, and Turkish.

Living in Hessen

Darmstadt is a city of approximately 160,000 in southern Hesse, located 30 km south of Frankfurt in the Rhine-Main metropolitan area. It is a major hub for science and technology, home to TU Darmstadt, the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, and numerous technology and pharmaceutical companies. The city has excellent rail connections to Frankfurt (20 min by S-Bahn), Heidelberg, and Mannheim, making it convenient for students seeking internships or employment in the broader region. Living costs are moderate by German standards, with student accommodation available through Studentenwerk Darmstadt.

Student life & support

The Darmstadt campus is housed near the main railway station and features well-equipped classrooms, a rooftop terrace, on-campus library, and study areas. The dual-study model means students typically spend Monday–Tuesday on campus and Wednesday–Friday at their workplace partner, creating a distinct rhythm compared to traditional university study. Students receive a Germany-wide semester ticket for public transport. The iba organises open days and information events. Campus social life is more compact than at large universities given the smaller cohort size.
