Living in Darmstadt

Darmstadt is a city of approximately 160,000 in southern Hesse, located 30 km south of Frankfurt in the Rhine-Main metropolitan area. It is a major hub for science and technology, home to TU Darmstadt, the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, and numerous technology and pharmaceutical companies. The city has excellent rail connections to Frankfurt (20 min by S-Bahn), Heidelberg, and Mannheim, making it convenient for students seeking internships or employment in the broader region. Living costs are moderate by German standards, with student accommodation available through Studentenwerk Darmstadt.

Student life & support

The Darmstadt campus is housed near the main railway station and features well-equipped classrooms, a rooftop terrace, on-campus library, and study areas. The dual-study model means students typically spend Monday-Tuesday on campus and Wednesday-Friday at their workplace partner, creating a distinct rhythm compared to traditional university study. Students receive a Germany-wide semester ticket for public transport. The iba organises open days and information events. Campus social life is more compact than at large universities given the smaller cohort size.
