About MU Media University of Applied Sciences
MU Media University of Applied Sciences (German: HMKW - Hochschule für Medien, Kommunikation und Wirtschaft) is a private, state-recognised university of applied sciences founded in 2008. It holds institutional accreditation from the German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat) and programme accreditations through FIBAA. The university operates three campuses in Berlin, Cologne, and Frankfurt am Main, offering bachelor's and master's degrees across five departments: Design, Journalism and Communication, Psychology, Business and Management, and Humanities.
The institution emphasises small study groups, practice-oriented teaching, and partnerships with major media organisations including ZDF, Sony, and Deutsche Welle. Admissions & fees
What it costs
MU Media University is a private institution and charges tuition fees for all programmes. The university states that programmes are financed exclusively through tuition fees. Specific fee amounts per semester are not published in a publicly accessible fee schedule on the official website; prospective students must contact the Study Advisory Service for exact figures. All full-time programmes are in principle eligible for German BAföG state student financing (processed by Studentenwerk Berlin). Additional financing options include KfW student credit, the federal Bildungskredit, and various foundation scholarships. The university does not appear to apply a separate non-EU surcharge, but this should be confirmed directly.
Admission requirements
Bachelor's admission: applicants must hold a Fachhochschulreife or Abitur (or equivalent recognised by a Studienkolleg). There is no numerus clausus; admission is decided by an internal university selection procedure. Applicants to the BA Graphic Design programme must submit a portfolio (10-15 works, max 15 MB PDF) and demonstrate CEFR B2 in the teaching language if English is not their native language. International applicants whose school-leaving qualification is not directly recognised as equivalent to the German Fachhochschulreife must complete a Studienkolleg (foundation year) and pass the Feststellungsprüfung before applying. APS certificate: mandatory for applicants with qualifications from India, China (mainland, Hong Kong, Macau), and Vietnam - this is a German-wide legal requirement, not specific to MU. Master's admission: a relevant bachelor's degree is required; individual programmes additionally require subject-specific credit points (e.g. 20 ECTS in psychology for MSc Business Psychology). Language requirements vary by programme: B2 CEFR for most English-taught programmes; C1 CEFR for MA Public Relations and Digital Marketing and some German-taught tracks. Admission includes a personal interview with the department head.

Intake periods are April (summer semester) and October (winter semester). Specific application deadline dates are not published on the official website; the university directs applicants to submit an online enquiry form, after which the Study Advisory team contacts them to discuss next steps.
How international applicants apply
Not used / not documented: application runs exclusively through Media University's own online application form ('Bewerben'/'How to Apply'). Languages of instruction
Several master's programmes are taught entirely in English (e.g. MA Artificial Intelligence and Societies, MSc International Business, MA Visual and Media Anthropology). Some programmes at Berlin and Frankfurt campuses use English as the teaching language while the Cologne equivalent uses German. The sole bachelor's programme (BA Graphic Design and Visual Communication) requires at least CEFR B2 in the language of instruction. Prospective students should verify the teaching language for each programme on the university's programme page.
