About Musikakademie der Stadt Kassel "Louis Spohr"
Musikakademie der Stadt Kassel "Louis Spohr" is a state-recognised professional academy (staatlich anerkannte Berufsakademie) located at Karlsplatz 7 in the centre of Kassel, Hessen. It is described as the only state-recognised music academy between Frankfurt–Hannover and Weimar–Ruhr Valley, making it a regionally unique institution for professional music education.
The academy offers an accredited, internationally recognised Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy (IGP — Instrumental-/Gesangspädagogik), combining more than 50% artistic instruction (primary and secondary instruments, chamber music, choir and orchestra) with music pedagogy, musicology, and theory. Twelve specialisation profiles are available, including elementary music education, historical performance practice, ensemble conducting, composition, music theory, and popular music. A pre-college programme (Jungstudium) and a continuing education course in music mediation for kindergartens are also offered.
Approximately 120 students from over 20 nations are taught by around 60 experienced instructors, many of whom are active professional artists. The institution was founded in 1939 through the merger of several Kassel conservatories, received official academy status in 1955, and was renamed to include "Louis Spohr" in 2012 when it also gained independent bachelor-degree authority.
