Admission to all degree programmes at MHL is based on an aptitude test (Eignungsprüfung) assessing musical ability rather than academic grades alone. International applicants must meet the same aptitude standards as domestic students. Programmes are taught primarily in German; sufficient German language proficiency is expected for academic and ensemble participation. APS certificate requirements apply to applicants from India, China, and Vietnam for study in Germany, though the specific APS requirement should be confirmed with the institution given the specialist/arts nature of the programmes. Applications are accepted only twice a year via the MUVAC online portal; admission always requires passing the Eignungsprüfung (aptitude examination), held in February for summer-semester entry and in June for winter-semester entry. For summer semester 2027 the application window runs from 1 September to 1 December 2026 for all instruments and subjects. A EUR 60 examination fee applies, and non-native German speakers must pass a mandatory B2 German test during the aptitude examination (not required for Konzertexamen/Meisterklasse).

Direct entrance-exam model. Applications are submitted exclusively through the MUVAC online portal (no paper applications); admission always requires passing the Eignungsprüfung. No uni-assist or VPD procedure is documented on the official application pages.

Instruction is primarily in German. The institution offers an English-language website and hosts international students and faculty from 52 countries; however, degree programmes are taught predominantly in German.
