Living in Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe is the third-largest city in Baden-Württemberg with approximately 310,000 residents. It sits on the Rhine's right bank near the French border, roughly equidistant between Stuttgart and Frankfurt. The city is home to nine higher education institutions, most notably Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and has a strong technology and research economy - around 20% of regional jobs are in R&D. Karlsruhe also functions as Germany's legal centre, hosting the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice. The city's distinctive fan-shaped street layout radiates from its 1715 baroque palace, and public transport (seven tram lines plus a regional Stadtbahn network) makes the city easy to navigate without a car.

Student life & support

PH Karlsruhe has an International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) that coordinates incoming and outgoing exchange programmes, primarily under Erasmus+ agreements with partner universities across Europe. The office supports exchange students with enrolment, orientation, and integration. German-language courses for international students are offered through the university's language programme. Student housing in Karlsruhe is managed by the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe, which operates several halls of residence (Wohnheime) across the city; applications are made directly to the Studierendenwerk rather than the university. The student services organisation also provides a canteen (Mensa) and counselling services. The Europalehramt programme, a distinctive offering of the institution, includes a compulsory semester at a partner university abroad.
