About Pädagogische Hochschule Weingarten

Pädagogische Hochschule Weingarten (University of Education Weingarten) is a state university of education established in 1962, located in Weingarten in the Baden-Württemberg state of southern Germany near Lake Constance and the Alps. It operates from a historic baroque monastery complex on the Martinsberg and holds full doctoral and habilitation rights, distinguishing it from many other universities of education in Germany.

The university is structured across two faculties and offers 10 bachelor's and 13 master's degree programmes outside of teacher education tracks, in addition to bachelor's and master's level teacher certification programmes at primary and secondary levels. Subject areas include early childhood education, speech-language pathology, environmental education, exercise and nutrition science, media and educational management, business informatics, psychology (with a focus on learning and counselling), and vocational teacher education.

Research at PH Weingarten is coordinated through four centres focusing on education for sustainable development, digital media, and heterogeneity. The university has been certified as a family-friendly institution since 2016 and maintains Erasmus+ exchange partnerships with more than 65 partner universities worldwide.

Admissions & costs

Tuition & fees

As a public university in Baden-Württemberg, PH Weingarten charges no programme tuition for EU/EEA students. Under Baden-Württemberg's non-EU tuition policy, non-EU international students are subject to a fee of €1,500 per semester (introduced from winter semester 2017/18). All students additionally pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covering student services and public transport; the exact current amount was not published on the pages reviewed — contact the Studierenden Service Zentrum at +49 751 501-8220 for the current figure. Estimated monthly living costs in Weingarten are approximately €750–€800 according to the university's own guidance for incoming students.

Admission requirements

Degree-seeking international applicants must hold a recognised university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) equivalent to the German Abitur. Applications are submitted through the university's eCampus portal. Exchange students (incoming) require nomination by a partner institution and must apply through the Mobility Online portal with a CV, motivation letter (in German or English), transcript, proof of enrolment at the home university, and a language certificate (German or English). Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants who previously studied in those countries and are applying for a degree programme typically require an APS certificate before the German student visa can be issued. German language proficiency is the standard expectation for most programmes; the International Office offers an introductory German language and culture course for incoming exchange students.

Application deadlines

For winter semester 2026/27: most bachelor's programmes open 15 May and close 15 September 2026 (Lehramt Grundschule and BA Logopädie close 15 July 2026). Most master's programmes open 15 May and close 15 September 2026 (MA Logopädie and MA Media & Educational Management close 15 July; MA Lehramt and MA Psychology close 31 May 2026). For summer semester 2027: MA Lehramt programmes accept applications 15–30 November 2026. Exchange/incoming students: housing applications to Seezeit student housing close 15 June (for summer semester) and 15 December (for winter semester).

Languages of instruction

The primary language of instruction is German. One dedicated English-medium exchange programme is available: the 'Global Classroom in Teacher Education', a semester-long programme covering international and intercultural education, intercultural teaching practice, subject-specific didactics, and an introduction to German language and culture. Incoming exchange students may also submit their motivation letter in English. No degree programmes taught fully in English are listed for degree-seeking students outside the Global Classroom exchange track.

Living in Baden-Württemberg

Weingarten is a small city of approximately 25,000 residents in the Ravensburg district of Baden-Württemberg, situated in Upper Swabia roughly 90 km east of Freiburg and 20 km north of Lake Constance (Bodensee). The city is known for the Weingarten Abbey, a major baroque basilica on the Martinsberg hill that also forms the backdrop for the university campus. The surrounding region offers easy access to the Alps, Lake Constance recreational areas, and the cities of Ravensburg and Friedrichshafen. The nearest international airport is Friedrichshafen (about 30 km); Stuttgart and Munich airports are reachable by train in approximately 2–2.5 hours.

Student life & support

The International Office ([email protected]) coordinates exchange and mobility programmes and provides dedicated support for incoming students, including pre-arrival guidance and orientation. Student housing is managed through Seezeit — the student services organisation for the Lake Constance–Upper Swabia region — which operates dormitories in Weingarten; applications must be submitted separately to Seezeit by 15 June (summer) or 15 December (winter). The university's incoming programme includes an introductory course on German language, culture, and the school system. A campus orientation week (Semestereinstiegswoche) is held at the start of each semester. The university is certified as a family-friendly institution and provides counselling, coaching, and study advisory services through its Studierenden Service Zentrum.
