About Universität Stuttgart
Universität Stuttgart is a leading research-intensive technical university founded in 1829, located in the state capital of Baden-Württemberg. It enrolls approximately 26,000 students across around 150 study programmes and employs over 5,600 staff. The university is a member of TU9, the alliance of Germany's nine leading technical universities.
The university follows what it calls the "Stuttgart Way" - an interdisciplinary integration of engineering, natural sciences, humanities, management, economics, and social sciences. It ranks 310th globally in QS World University Rankings 2026, 251-300 in THE World University Rankings 2026, and received €188.3 million in DFG research funding (2020-2022), placing 19th among all German universities.
International students make up approximately 20% of the student body. The university maintains partnerships with nearly 400 foreign universities and offers a growing number of English-taught master's programmes alongside a large portfolio of German-taught degrees.

Admissions & fees
What it costs
Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU/EEA students a tuition fee of €1,500 per semester (introduced 2017). EU/EEA citizens are exempt. Additional exemptions exist for holders of certain German residence permits, those who completed their Hochschulzugangsberechtigung at a German school, and others - applications for exemption are processed individually. All enrolled students pay a semester contribution of approximately €184, which covers administrative costs and student services. Students pursuing a second degree pay a reduced tuition fee of €650 per semester.
Admission requirements
International applicants must meet three requirements: (1) a recognised university entrance qualification - foreign credentials not automatically recognised lead to referral to a Studienkolleg (the university itself has no on-site Studienkolleg; students are directed to KIT Karlsruhe or Heidelberg University depending on subject); (2) language proficiency in the language of instruction (see languages field); (3) any programme-specific subject criteria. Applications are submitted through the university's C@MPUS online portal at no application fee. Non-EU applicants from India, China, and Vietnam are required to obtain an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate before the visa application - this is a German consulate requirement, not a university admissions step, but applications without APS will be blocked at the visa stage.
Application deadlines
Bachelor's programmes: winter semester only (no summer intake for bachelor's) - applications open 15 May and close 15 July (programmes with entrance exams/restricted admission) or 15 September (unrestricted programmes). Master's programmes (German-taught): winter semester 15 May-15 July; summer semester 1 December-15 January. Studienkolleg pathway: winter semester 15 May-15 July; summer semester 15 November-15 January. English-taught master's programmes may have different deadlines; individual programme pages should be consulted.
How international applicants apply
No uni-assist. All applicant groups (German, EU and non-EU citizens) apply directly through the C@MPUS campus-management system; non-EU applicants upload their certificates directly in C@MPUS (no paper, no fee). The international-application pages contain no uni-assist/VPD requirement and Stuttgart is not on uni-assist's member list.
Languages of instruction
The majority of bachelor's and many master's programmes are taught in German. A growing number of master's programmes are offered in English, particularly in STEM fields. German-taught programmes require TestDaF TDN 4 (all four sections), DSH-2, Goethe C1/C2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, or DSD II. English-taught programmes have separate language requirements specified per programme. Language proficiency must be demonstrated at the time of application; conditional admission pending later submission of proof is not possible.

It is one of Germany's most economically productive cities, serving as headquarters for companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Bosch, and Daimler Truck - making it an exceptionally strong location for engineering, automotive, and technology students. The city sits in a valley surrounded by vineyards and forested hills, and offers excellent public transport connections including S-Bahn and U-Bahn networks. Frankfurt Airport is roughly 50 minutes away by train.

The university offers German language courses ranging from three-week intensive courses to two-semester preparatory programmes; a basic level of German is required to enrol. Orientation events for new international students are held at the start of each semester. Student organisations, sports facilities via Hochschulsport Stuttgart, and career services are available to all enrolled students.
