About DHGS
The Deutsche Hochschule für Gesundheit und Sport (DHGS) is a private, state-recognised university of applied sciences headquartered in Berlin, specialising exclusively in health, sport, and psychology. Founded in 2007, it is one of Berlin's largest private universities with over 2,700 enrolled students across its network of campuses and training centres in Germany and Austria.
DHGS operates a semi-virtual study model in which online learning phases alternate with in-person intensive sessions at one of its locations, making the programmes accessible to working professionals and elite athletes alongside full-time students. The institution holds system accreditation from the German Accreditation Council (Akkreditierungsrat) and institutional accreditation from the German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat); its psychology programmes are additionally recognised by the German Psychological Association (BDP).
Programmes span three subject areas - Health (Gesundheit), Psychology (Psychologie), and Sport - with around 20 degree programmes at bachelor and master level, plus approximately 18 continuing-education certificate programmes. Admission is NC-free (no numerus clausus). Full-time students are eligible for BAföG state funding, and a dual/cooperative study track lets employer-sponsored students study tuition-free while receiving a salary.

Admissions & fees
What it costs
Private institution - tuition fees apply. Fees are charged monthly and vary by programme; specific amounts are listed on individual programme pages on the official website. A one-time registration and examination fee is also charged. Full-time students may be eligible for BAföG state funding. In a cooperative/dual study model, employer-sponsored students pay no tuition and receive a salary. Scholarships include an Ismaning stipend for local residents and sports scholarships via Olympic training centres (Olympiastützpunkte).
Admission requirements
Admission is NC-free (no numerus clausus). Bachelor programmes require a German Abitur, Fachhochschulreife, or an equivalent foreign secondary qualification recognised in Germany (foreign qualifications can be checked at anerkennung-in-deutschland.de). Entry without Abitur is possible under certain conditions with a completed vocational qualification. Master programmes require a relevant bachelor's degree. International applicants must have their qualifications formally recognised; Erasmus+ and DAAD exchange semesters are available. As programmes are taught in German, a sufficient level of German language proficiency is required; specific language certificate thresholds should be confirmed directly with the institution. APS certificate required for Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants applying via the standard visa route.
Application deadlines
Winter semester (October start): 30 August. Summer semester (April start): 28/29 February. Applications are submitted via the online portal at anmeldung.dhgs-hochschule.de.
How international applicants apply
Direct portal - no fixed uni-assist requirement. DHGS uses its own comfortable online application portal (anmeldung.dhgs-hochschule.de); no deadlines, continuous start. For foreign certificates the rule is case-by-case: applicants send their certificate as PDF in advance and the Studierendenkanzlei checks whether a certificate evaluation is needed 'durch die ZAB, uni-assist o.ae.' - i.e. uni-assist may be named as one possible evaluating body but DHGS is not a uni-assist member university and does not route standard applications through it; certified copies of all certificates must be presented as originals at enrolment.

Living in Berlin
Berlin is Germany's capital and largest city, home to around 3.7 million people. It is a global hub for technology, creative industries, healthcare, and sport - all directly relevant to DHGS graduates. The DHGS Berlin campus sits in Lichtenberg (east Berlin), roughly 20 minutes from Alexanderplatz by public transport, in a lively neighbourhood with extensive dining and retail options. Berlin offers a lower cost of living than Munich or Frankfurt, a dense public transport network, and one of Europe's most active student social scenes.
Student life & support
DHGS Berlin campus facilities include modern seminar rooms, a subject-specific library with research spaces, bookable group-work rooms, and lounge areas. The semi-virtual format means in-person phases are intensive but infrequent, with students studying mainly online between campus blocks. The institution supports elite athletes through the Spitzensport und Studium (elite sport and study) programme in partnership with Berlin's Olympic training centre. Campus culture is oriented around health, sport, and psychology practitioners - class sizes are small and mentoring is emphasised.
