About Hochschule Bremerhaven
Hochschule Bremerhaven (Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences) is a public university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) established in 1975 and located in the coastal city of Bremerhaven, in the state of Bremen. Approximately 3,000 students from around 40 nations are enrolled across two faculties and 25 degree programmes, 17 at bachelor's level and 8 at master's level.
The university is organised into Faculty 1 (Technology) and Faculty 2 (Management and Information Systems). Research is conducted across 18 institutes grouped into four clusters: Energy and Maritime Technology, Life Sciences, Logistics and Information Systems, and Tourism and Management. Its maritime location on the Weser estuary gives the institution a distinct applied-research character, particularly in energy and marine engineering.
Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is known for its compact, city-centre campus and practically oriented teaching. It participates in the DAAD STIBET I programme for international student support and maintains an active international office offering housing, registration, and scholarship assistance to incoming students from abroad.

Admissions & fees
What it costs
No tuition fees are charged for any student regardless of nationality - tuition-free as at a public Bremen-state university. A semester contribution of EUR 420 (from winter semester 2025/26) covers administrative costs and re-registration. No additional non-EU surcharge applies (Bremen state does not levy the non-EU fee that Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria charge).
Admission requirements
Non-EU applicants for bachelor's programmes must apply via uni-assist.de by 15 July (winter semester) or 15 January (summer semester). German language proficiency at C1 level (DSH-2 or TestDaF with 16 points) is required for German-taught programmes; the International Tourism Management programme requires only A1 German. Required documents include university entrance qualification, signed CV with photo, identity document, health insurance proof, and language certificates. APS certificate is required for applicants from India, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and Vietnam before the German student visa can be issued - this is a German consulate requirement, not specific to the university. For master's programmes, non-EU applicants apply via uni-assist.de by 15 July (winter) or 15 January (summer); language requirements are programme-specific per the respective admission regulations.

How international applicants apply
Full uni-assist application - international applicants whose Hochschulzugangsberechtigung was obtained outside the EU must apply via uni-assist (bachelor deadlines: admission-free programmes 15 July, restricted programmes 30 June). Non-EU master applicants likewise apply via www.uni-assist.de (PEET/ESD: 31 Dec for SoSe / 30 Jun for WiSe; other masters: 15 Jan SoSe / 15 Jul WiSe); holders of a valid uni-assist report apply directly on ecampus.hs-bremerhaven.de uploading the report.
Languages of instruction
Most programmes are taught in German. Some master's programmes and course content are available in English. The university website is fully bilingual (German/English).

Living in Bremerhaven
Bremerhaven is a port city of approximately 115,000 inhabitants on the North Sea coast, situated at the mouth of the River Weser in the state of Bremen. It is home to major maritime institutions including the German Maritime Museum (Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum) and the Klimahaus 8° Ost science centre. The city has a lower cost of living compared to major German cities, making it an affordable study location. It is well connected to Bremen by frequent regional trains (approx. 1 hour), which offers broader cultural and transport options including international flights from Bremen Airport.
Student life & support
The student union (AStA) covers 12 areas of responsibility including social, cultural, and sports activities. The university has three dining and social spaces on campus: a Mensa (canteen), the StuCa student café, and a cafeteria. An active 'Local Erasmus Initiative' organises cultural events and excursions for both international and domestic students. The International Office coordinates STIBET scholarships for international students in academic difficulty or nearing graduation, as well as partner contact stipends and emergency financial assistance.
