International applicants to Bachelor's programmes must have their foreign school certificates assessed by uni-assist (for most nationalities) or the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) for applicants from India, China, and Vietnam - the APS assessment is an alternative to uni-assist for these nationalities and takes approximately 6-8 weeks. Applicants receive a VPD (preliminary documentation) which is then submitted with the online application to HM. All Bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require a certified German language certificate at B2 or C1 level; enrolment without proof of German language proficiency is not possible. For Master's programmes, applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree of at least 6 semesters with 180 ECTS and a good academic grade. Some Master's programmes require relevant work experience or departmental entrance tests. Five Master's programmes are taught in English. Applicants from India, China, or Vietnam applying to certain Master's programmes also require APS verification.

Bachelor's programmes: Winter Semester - 2 May to 31 July (Design and Architecture: deadline 15 June, portfolio by 31 May); Summer Semester - 15 November to 15 January. Master's programmes: Winter Semester - 2 May to 15 June (restricted-access programmes: to 15 July; Business Administration: to 31 May); Summer Semester - 15 November to 15 January. Exchange students: nomination deadline Winter Semester 1 May, application 15 May; Summer Semester nomination 1 November, application 15 November.

uni-assist for VPD only. Applicants whose certificates were not obtained in Germany must have them evaluated by uni-assist (VPD, EUR 75, allow 6-8 weeks; 'Bachelor - all subjects' option) and upload the VPD to the HM application portal (PRIMUSS) - the VPD does not replace the application to HM, which is submitted directly in the university portal. APS additionally for China/India/Vietnam. Exemption: state Studienkolleg FSP certificate or ZAB/Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle notice with grade replaces the VPD.

The majority of Bachelor's and Master's programmes are taught in German, requiring B2 or C1 proficiency at enrolment. English-taught Master's programmes include Photonics, Micro- and Nanotechnology, Paper Technology, Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation, and Business Administration: Digital Technology Management. In addition, over 100 individual courses per semester across all 14 faculties are offered in English through the Courses in English (CiE) elective programme.
