Living in München

Munich (München) is the capital of Bavaria and Germany's third-largest city, with approximately 1.5 million residents. It is one of Europe's major economic and technology hubs, home to the headquarters of BMW, Siemens, MAN, and Allianz, as well as a thriving startup ecosystem. The city is consistently ranked among the highest quality-of-life cities in the world. Students benefit from excellent public transport (the S-Bahn/U-Bahn network covers all three HM campuses), proximity to the Alps, and a rich cultural scene. Munich is, however, the most expensive city in Germany for accommodation, and international students should plan housing arrangements well in advance.

Student life & support

HM's International Office ([email protected]) coordinates services for incoming students including orientation programmes, the HoMe peer mentoring programme (connecting new international students with experienced HM students), and support for refugees and migrants. The university provides access to university sports facilities and the International Club. German language courses are available through the university to support integration. For housing, students are advised to apply early to Studentenwerk München dormitories (typical wait 3-4 semesters) and consult private platforms such as stuwo.de, studenten-wg.de, and mitwohnzentrale.de. A monthly public transport student ticket covers the entire Munich network at approximately €43/month.
