About Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe
The Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe (University of Music Karlsruhe) is a specialist state music conservatoire located in Baden-Württemberg. Its roots trace to 1812, when a musical education institute for wind instruments was privately founded in Karlsruhe; a singing institute followed in 1814 with city support. The institution merged with the Grand Ducal Conservatory in 1910, became the Badische Hochschule für Musik in 1929, and was taken over by the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1971 as the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.
Approximately 620 students from more than 60 nations study here under roughly 80 full-time professors and 180 lecturers. The curriculum spans performance (instrumental and vocal), composition, music theory, musicology, music pedagogy, school music teacher training, and distinctive programmes in Music Theatre Directing and Music Journalism for Radio, Television and Internet.
All academic buildings form a single campus (CampusOne) centred on the historic Schloss Gottesaue, complemented by the Wolfgang Rihm Forum concert hall (opened 2013), the Fany Solter House practice complex, Marstall (music theatre), and the Horst Günter Library. The institution maintains nine performance ensembles and hosts more than 400 public events annually.

Admissions & fees
What it costs
First-degree (consecutive Bachelor's and Master's) programmes at this public conservatoire are tuition-free for all students. Under Baden-Württemberg state law, non-EU/EEA students pay an additional fee of €1,500 per semester; exemptions apply for students with a domestic university-entrance qualification or equivalent fixed domestic enrolment status. A second-degree surcharge of €650/semester applies. Advanced/Soloist Exam programmes: €1,400/semester. Supplementary and CAS courses: €1,000/semester. Admission requirements
Admission is by competitive entrance examination (Aufnahmeprüfung/audition) rather than grades alone. For most instrumental and vocal programmes, the application window for Winter Semester 2026/27 was 1 March - 1 April 2026, with auditions scheduled 6-12 June 2026. Music Journalism (Bachelor) closed 17 May 2026; Musicology/Music Informatics closed 15 June 2026. International applicants must submit a CV, motivation letter, teacher recommendation, study plan, and audio/video recordings. German language proficiency is required for most programmes; applicants should verify the exact level with the Admissions Office. APS certificate is not a standard requirement for this specialist conservatoire (admission is audition-based), but Indian/Chinese/Vietnamese applicants seeking a student visa must still obtain APS before the German consulate will issue a visa. No specific minimum school-leaving grade is published; artistic merit at audition is the primary criterion.
