Hochschule für Technik, Wirtschaft und Kultur Leipzig (HTWK Leipzig) is a state university of applied sciences (Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften) located in Leipzig, Saxony. It was refounded in 1992, with predecessor institutions tracing back to 1838, and currently enrols approximately 6,500 students across six faculties covering engineering, computer science, business, media, architecture, and social sciences.
HTWK Leipzig is recognised as one of Germany's research-active universities of applied sciences, with institutional accreditation rights for its own degree programmes since June 2021. Admissions & fees
What it costs
HTWK Leipzig charges no tuition fees for initial degree studies, consistent with Saxony state policy for both EU and non-EU students. Students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) covering student-union services and the semester public-transport ticket; the exact current amount is not published as a figure on the official site and should be confirmed at enrolment. A long-term study fee of €500 per semester applies if a student exceeds the standard period of study by more than four semesters.
Admission requirements
International applicants must hold a recognised higher-education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung). Applications are processed through uni-assist e.V., which handles credential evaluation and grade conversion. Most degree programmes are admission-restricted (zulassungsbeschränkt) with selection based on grades; the Architecture programme additionally requires an aptitude test. German-language proficiency at C1/C2 level is required for entry into degree programmes (accepted certificates: DSH-2, TestDaF TDN 4, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSD II, Goethe C2). Applicants whose qualifications do not yet meet entry requirements may apply for a preparatory German course or the Studienkolleg Zittau/Görlitz with B1/B2 German. No specific mention of APS certificate requirement appears on the HTWK Leipzig site; Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants should note that APS is a German embassy requirement for their visa application regardless of university-level instructions.
Application deadlines
Winter Semester (study start 1 October): applications open 1 April. Deadline 15 June for applicants needing a preparatory German course or Studienkolleg (minimum B1/B2 German). Deadline 15 July for bachelor's and master's applicants with C1/C2 German certification. Summer Semester (study start 1 April): applications open 1 November. Deadline 15 December for preparatory course/Studienkolleg applicants. Deadline 15 January for master's applicants with C1/C2 German. Note: not all programmes offer a summer-semester intake; verify per programme.
How international applicants apply
Used - full processing by uni-assist (application forwarded to HTWK Leipzig). International applicants and German applicants with foreign certificates - including EU citizens - must apply online via uni-assist e.V.: it checks recognition of the school/university certificates in Germany, converts grades to the German system and evaluates language proof, then forwards valid applications to HTWK Leipzig ('Nach erfolgreicher Pruefung Ihrer Unterlagen durch uni-assist e.V. wird Ihre Bewerbung an die HTWK Leipzig weitergeleitet'). No documents are sent by post. Special rules: from the WS 2026/27 application phase onwards VPDs or Pruefberichte issued by uni-assist for OTHER universities are no longer accepted (fraud concerns), while repeat applicants holding a previous uni-assist Pruefbericht FOR HTWK may apply directly via the HTWK application portal (never both routes at once). Direct study requires C1/C2 German (DSH-2, TestDaF 4 in all parts, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSD II, Goethe C2); applicants with B1/B2 can apply via uni-assist for the Studienkolleg/DSH course at Zittau/Goerlitz with earlier deadlines (15 Jun WS / 15 Dec SS vs 15 Jul / 15 Jan for C1).
Languages of instruction
Instruction at HTWK Leipzig is conducted principally in German. Applicants for German-taught programmes must hold a recognised C1/C2 German-language certificate (DSH-2, TestDaF TDN 4 in all sections, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSD II, or Goethe-Zertifikat C2). The university language centre offers courses in six languages. A small number of English-taught or English-supported programmes exist at postgraduate level; applicants should verify individual programme requirements directly.

Living in Leipzig
Leipzig is Saxony's largest city and one of Germany's fastest-growing urban centres, with approximately 40,000 students across its universities and colleges. The city is known for its affordable cost of living relative to other German university cities, a lively cultural scene (music, arts, nightlife), and excellent rail connections to Berlin (approx. 1 hour) and other major cities. The Studentenwerk Leipzig operates student canteens (Mensen) and manages student housing in the city.
Student life & support
The International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) provides central support for international students through the FIT Project (Förderung internationaler Studierender), which guides students from programme selection through to career entry. Services include orientation, integration support, and career-networking events (Career Connect). The university language centre offers courses in six languages at various proficiency levels, which is particularly relevant for international students wishing to improve their German. The campus sports hall runs over 70 course types across 76 hours per week. Student housing is coordinated through the Studentenwerk Leipzig, not directly through HTWK. The student mensa (Mensa Academica) and an on-campus orchestra (approximately 60 musicians) round out campus life.
