Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim (MuHo Mannheim) is a public conservatoire and performing arts university in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg. Its roots trace to the Seminarium musicum at the Jesuit College in 1756 and the Tonschule founded in 1776 by Abbé Vogler; the institution gained state status in 1971, when the Heidelberg Conservatory (founded 1894) also merged with it. It is one of the leading music and performing arts institutions in the German-speaking world.
The university offers programmes across classical music, jazz and popular music, dance, dance pedagogy, and music education (Lehramt), at bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral (Habilitation) levels. It hosts approximately 500 public events per year, including concerts, opera productions, theatre performances, and masterclasses. Notable specialist units include the Akademie des Tanzes - the only university-level dance academy in Baden-Württemberg - and the state-designated Landeszentrum für Dirigieren (conducting centre).
The main campus is located in the city centre at N7, 18, in a complex comprising a historic Altbau (former Siemenshaus) and a modern building, both within a five-to-ten-minute walk from Mannheim Hauptbahnhof. The Orchesterakademie Rhein-Neckar (founded 2005) and the collaborative Netzwerk Amadé talent programme extend the university's regional engagement.

Admissions & fees
What it costs
As a public university in Baden-Württemberg, MuHo Mannheim charges no tuition for regular bachelor's and master's programmes for EU/EEA students. All students pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) of approximately €193 per semester (2026 figure), comprising a student-services contribution (€100), an administrative-cost contribution (€80), and a student-body (AStA) contribution (€13). Non-EU/EEA students pay an additional tuition fee of €1,500 per semester for bachelor's and master's programmes, in line with the Baden-Württemberg state policy for non-EU international students introduced in WS 2017/18. Postgraduate supplementary programmes (Zusatzstudium, Aufbaustudium) carry additional fees of €250-€700 per semester depending on scope.
Admission requirements
All applicants - domestic and international - must pass a mandatory entrance examination (Aufnahmeprüfung). Admissions take place twice yearly (winter and summer intakes) for most programmes; Jazz/Popular Music and Dance bachelor's programmes are winter-only. Foreign school-leaving certificates must be recognised as equivalent to the German Hochschulreife by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture or an equivalent authority. The university's Studienservice office and the International Office ([email protected]) advise on equivalency questions. German-language proficiency must be documented by the time of enrolment. Minimum levels by programme: B2 for most music and conducting programmes; C1 for teacher-education programmes (Bachelor/Master Lehramt) and the Music Research/Media Practice specialisation; A2 for the Dance/Dance Pedagogy Master's. Accepted certificates include DSH, TestDaF, and telc. Applicants who cannot provide the required certificate by the application deadline are automatically excluded from the process. APS certificate: The official admission pages make no mention of an APS certificate requirement. However, Indian, Chinese (mainland, HK, Macau), and Vietnamese applicants are subject to the national APS requirement for German student visas regardless of what individual universities state. Applicants from these countries should obtain their APS certificate before applying for a student visa. Non-EU applicants must obtain a German student visa after receiving an admission letter and must hold valid statutory health insurance.

Deadlines below are for the entrance-examination registration (Anmeldung zur Aufnahmeprüfung); check the official Hochschultermine page for the current cycle. Bachelor/Master Musik (classical) and Lehramt Musik: Winter semester - 15 October to 15 November; Summer semester - 1-30 April. Bachelor/Master Jazz/Popular Music: Winter semester only - 1-31 March. Bachelor/Master Dance / Dance Pedagogy: Winter semester only - 1-28 February; Tanzpädagogik Master's applications accepted year-round via [email protected]. Note: Jazz, Dance, and Wind Academy programmes recruit for the winter semester only.
How international applicants apply
Direct application - uni-assist and hochschulstart are NOT documented on any official admission page. Applicants apply online and must pass the Aufnahmeprüfung (entrance examination), which takes place twice a year for the autumn semester (Herbstsemester) and spring semester (Fruehjahrssemester) - except Jazz/Popular Music, which admits only for autumn. General or subject-restricted higher-education entrance qualification (Abitur or recognised equivalent) is required; applicants who cannot show an HZB may take a Begabtenprüfung as part of the entrance examination. Non-EU citizens need a student visa before travelling and German health insurance for enrolment; the International Office ([email protected]) advises degree-seeking internationals on housing, buddy programme, integration and scholarships.
Languages of instruction
Teaching is conducted primarily in German. No programmes are listed as taught in English on the official website. International students admitted to degree programmes must satisfy German-language requirements (see admission overview) before enrolment. Instruction in individual lessons and masterclasses may use other languages depending on the professor.

Mannheim is a major city in Baden-Württemberg with roughly 320,000 inhabitants, situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate. It is part of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, giving students easy rail access to Heidelberg (15 minutes), Frankfurt (45 minutes), and Stuttgart (40 minutes). The city has a long musical heritage - it hosted the influential Mannheim School of orchestral composition in the 18th century - and today supports a vibrant cultural scene including the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg, and numerous live-music venues. Living costs are moderate compared to Munich or Frankfurt.

A Buddy Programme pairs new international students with experienced peers. The university does not operate its own student residence; students are directed to the local housing market and the Studierendenwerk Mannheim for dormitory places. The approximately 500 annual public events - concerts, opera, dance, and theatre productions - provide extensive performance experience and integration into Mannheim's cultural life.
