Living in Mannheim

Mannheim is a mid-sized city of around 310,000 inhabitants in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region in Baden-Württemberg, at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers. It is known for its distinctive grid-layout city centre, vibrant arts and music scene, and strong industrial and tech-sector economy. The city is well-connected by rail (direct ICE links to Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Paris) and sits within easy reach of Heidelberg (20 min) and Frankfurt (40 min). The Rhine-Neckar region is home to several universities, making it a lively student environment.

Student life & support

The International Office (Building J) provides dedicated support for degree-seeking international students, including a Buddy Programme pairing arrivals with peer mentors and a Kulturprogramm of cultural and social events. The Sprachenzentrum (Language Centre) offers German language courses to support academic and daily-life integration. Housing enquiries can be directed to [email protected]; student accommodation is typically coordinated through the regional Studierendenwerk. The university also operates a Makerspace and a startup centre (MARS) for entrepreneurially minded students. Scholarships including the Deutschlandstipendium (€300/month) and DAAD funding are available for eligible international students.
