Hochschule Harz - University of Applied Sciences is a public Fachhochschule in Sachsen-Anhalt, founded in 1991 and described as the youngest university of applied sciences in the state. It operates two campuses: the main campus in Wernigerode and a second campus in Halberstadt (active since 2004), with approximately 3,000 students spread across three faculties covering computer science, business, and administrative sciences.
The university emphasises applied, practice-oriented study with small seminar groups, fixed timetables, and close contact between students and lecturers. It holds the "Familiengerechte Hochschule" (family-friendly university) and "Weltoffene Hochschule" (open-minded university) certifications, and maintains EMAS environmental accreditation. All three faculties offer bachelor's and master's programmes. The Faculty of Automation and Computer Science (Wernigerode) covers Computer Science, Business Informatics, Media Informatics, Smart Automation, Data Science, and Engineering Education. The Faculty of Business Studies (Wernigerode) covers Business Administration, Marketing Management, International Business Studies, Tourism Management, Business Psychology, and master's programmes in Business Consulting, Sustainable Management, and Consumer Psychology. The Faculty of Administrative Sciences (Halberstadt) covers European Administrative Management, Public Administration, and Administrative Economics.

What it costs
No tuition fees for bachelor's and consecutive master's programmes at this public Fachhochschule in Sachsen-Anhalt (no non-EU surcharge as in Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria). Admission requirements
International applicants to bachelor's programmes must hold a higher education entrance qualification (HZB) recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur; the university uses the anabin database for assessment. Applicants whose school qualification is not fully recognised must complete a Studienkolleg (foundation year) first. Applications are submitted exclusively through uni-assist (my.uni-assist.de); processing takes 4-6 weeks after submission. Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must present a valid APS certificate (exceptions apply for graduates of German Studienkolleg or holders of EU/German scholarships). Languages of instruction
Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German. Two programmes are offered in English: International Business Studies and International Tourism Studies. Exchange students may attend courses in either German or English (minimum B2 in the respective language required).

Main campus at Friedrichstrasse 57-59, 38855 Wernigerode. Houses the Faculty of Automation and Computer Science and the Faculty of Business Studies, plus the central library, dining hall, cafeteria, fitness room, sports hall, and four of the six student halls of residence.
Located at Domplatz 16, 38820 Halberstadt in the town centre since 2004. Houses the Faculty of Administrative Sciences. Features a large auditorium modelled on the British House of Commons, a language self-study centre, and the Domcafete cafeteria.
Living in Wernigerode
Wernigerode is a small, well-preserved medieval town of roughly 35,000 inhabitants in the northern Harz Mountains of Sachsen-Anhalt. It is known for its colourful half-timbered houses, a hilltop castle, and direct access to the Harz National Park and the narrow-gauge Harzer Schmalspurbahnen steam railway. The compact size keeps living costs low and commute times negligible. Larger cities - Magdeburg, Braunschweig, Hannover, Leipzig, and Berlin - are reachable by train or car within one to three hours, making it a quiet base with good regional connectivity.

The Wernigerode campus is described as a park-like, compact setting where all academic buildings, the library, canteen, and four of six student dormitories are within walking distance. About 15 student initiatives are active on campus alongside sports facilities (fitness room, sports hall, beach volleyball court). The semester ticket covers local buses and trams in both Wernigerode and Halberstadt. The International Office organises support services, orientation events, and the ViSit international student programme. A language and multimedia centre supports both academic and everyday language needs.
