About Technische Hochschule Ulm
Technische Hochschule Ulm (THU), officially known in English as Ulm University of Applied Sciences, is a public Fachhochschule located in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg. The university offers degree programmes across six faculties covering engineering, computer science, natural sciences, economics, and medical engineering, with a strong emphasis on applied research and close industry collaboration.
THU operates two main teaching campuses in Ulm: the central Prittwitzstraße campus near the city centre and the Albert-Einstein-Allee campus. The university offers 32 degree programmes in total - 21 bachelor's and 11 master's programmes - of which three are taught primarily in English and are specifically designed to attract international students.
As a Fachhochschule in Baden-Württemberg, THU charges non-EU/EEA students a tuition fee of €1,500 per semester, in addition to the standard semester contribution. Admissions & fees
What it costs
As a public university in Baden-Württemberg, THU charges non-EU/EEA students a tuition fee of €1,500 per semester. EU/EEA students and German nationals pay only the standard semester contribution (€182 at enrolment; €172 at re-registration), which covers the Students' Union fee (€77), a Baden-Württemberg administration fee (€80), and the Students' Council fee (€15). Students pursuing a second degree programme pay an additional €650 per semester. Exceptions and exemptions exist and must be applied for before lectures begin. Contact: [email protected].
Admission requirements
International applicants must have a higher education entrance qualification recognised in Germany. Applicants with foreign school-leaving certificates are directed to the Studienkolleg Konstanz for credential recognition assessment. For English-taught programmes (CTS, EET, ISY), applicants need proof of English proficiency at B2 level or above (TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate, or equivalent) and a completed German language skills declaration form. For German-taught programmes, applicants must provide TestDaF 4.0, DSH-2/3, telc Deutsch C1, or Goethe-Zertifikat C2. APS certificate: Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants are required by German authorities (not THU-specific) to obtain an APS certificate before applying for a student visa; THU's application portal does not explicitly list this, but the APS requirement applies at the visa stage. Applications are submitted via the THU application portal (SELMA). Bachelor applicants in numerus-clausus subjects must also register on hochschulstart.de.
Application deadlines
Bachelor's programmes: winter semester (October start) - deadline approximately 15 July; summer semester (April start) - deadline approximately 15 January. Master's programmes: winter semester - deadline approximately 1 June; summer semester - deadline approximately 15 December. Applicants should verify exact dates on the THU application portal (SELMA) as deadlines may vary by programme.
How international applicants apply
Not used. All applicants with a foreign higher education entrance qualification apply directly via the THU-Bewerbungsportal (SELMA/SAP portal, selma.thu.de). Recognition of foreign certificates runs outside uni-assist: German nationals request Zeugnisanerkennung from the Regierungspraesidium Stuttgart, foreign nationals from the Studienkolleg Konstanz (HTWG Konstanz); the recognition must be on hand by the application deadline. No uni-assist process appears anywhere on the international-application pages and THU is not on the uni-assist member list.
Languages of instruction
The majority of THU's 32 degree programmes are taught in German. Three programmes are taught primarily in English and are open to international applicants without German proficiency: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (CTS), Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (EET), and Master of Science in Intelligent Systems (ISY). German-taught programmes require TestDaF 4.0, DSH-2, DSH-3, telc Deutsch C1, or Goethe-Zertifikat C2. English-taught programmes require English at B2 level or higher (TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate, or equivalent); students in these programmes also receive introductory German language instruction in the first semesters.

Second main teaching campus; address: Albert-Einstein-Allee 53/55, 89081 Ulm. Houses the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and other departments in modern laboratory and lecture facilities. Reachable by tram line 2 and bus line 5.
Living in Ulm
Ulm is a city of approximately 120,000 inhabitants in Baden-Württemberg, situated on the Danube River at the border with Bavaria. It is home to the Ulm Minster, which has the world's tallest church tower, and the Ulm Museum housing the 40,000-year-old Lion Man sculpture. The city is compact and walkable, with a lively student scene, regular cultural events, and good public transport connections. The Alps are accessible for day trips, and Lake Constance is within reach by train.

The Students' Council (VS) represents all six faculties and organises social events, sports teams (including the Einstein Marathon and ski trips), and cultural groups (choir, orchestra, band). Two dining facilities operate: a Mensa and cafeteria at Prittwitzstraße, and the Kiwi Mensaria at Albert-Einstein-Allee campus.
