About Universität Hohenheim
Universität Hohenheim, founded in 1818 in response to a severe famine, is Stuttgart's oldest university and one of Germany's most specialised research institutions. The university focuses on agricultural sciences, food science, biotechnology, life sciences, and economics, combining intensive foundational research with applied solutions to societal challenges. It holds the QS World University Ranking #1 position in Germany for agricultural research and ranks consistently among Europe's top institutions in its core subject areas.
The university operates a compact single-campus setting in the Baroque Schloss Hohenheim, located in the south of Stuttgart. Its three broad faculty areas cover Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Business Administration, Economics and Social Sciences. The university offers over 40 degree programmes including a significant number of English-taught master's programmes, making it accessible to international students without German language proficiency.
The university places above-average emphasis on internationalisation, maintaining around 100 international partnership institutions and providing dedicated support through the Office of International Affairs. Non-EU international students are required to pay tuition fees of €1,500 per semester, a Baden-Württemberg state regulation that applies across all public universities in the state.

What it costs
Non-EU/EEA international students pay €1,500 per semester in tuition fees, applicable since winter semester 2017/18 under Baden-Württemberg state law. EU/EEA citizens, exchange students, refugees, and students who obtained their university entrance qualification in Germany are exempt from these fees. All students pay an additional semester contribution of €174.50 per semester covering administrative fees, Student Services, and Student Parliament contributions. A Zweitstudium (second degree) fee of €650 per semester applies where relevant, though the €1,500 international fee takes precedence if applicable.
Admission requirements
International applicants seeking a full bachelor's or master's degree apply through the university's HohCampus portal. For bachelor's programmes, most applications close on 15 July for winter semester; agriculture-related programmes have an extended deadline of 30 September. For master's programmes, non-EU applicants face earlier deadlines (typically 15 March for winter semester) compared to EU applicants (typically 15 September). Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese applicants who completed prior qualifications in those countries are required to obtain an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate before applying; this is a German Embassy requirement, not Hohenheim-specific. German-taught programmes require TestDaF TDN 4 or equivalent German proficiency. English-taught master's programmes typically require IELTS or equivalent English proficiency. Specific requirements vary by programme; applicants should check individual programme pages. Contact: [email protected] for degree-seeking international student enquiries.
Application deadlines
Winter semester: 15 July for most bachelor's programmes; 30 September for agriculture-related bachelor's programmes; 15 March for non-EU master's applicants; 15 September for EU master's applicants (programme-specific variation applies). Summer semester: 15 March for most full programmes; 15 January for higher-semester entry in non-agriculture specialisations. Deadlines vary by individual programme - consult the official application deadlines page.
How international applicants apply
No uni-assist - explicitly abolished as of winter semester 2022/23 ('Nein, seit dem Wintersemester 2022/23 ist keine zusaetzliche Bewerbung ueber uni-assist notwendig'). Applicants holding a foreign Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (EU and non-EU alike) apply directly online via the university's HohCampus application portal (up to three bachelor programmes), uploading certificates in the original language plus a German or English translation; equivalence with the German Abitur is checked by Uni Hohenheim during the application itself. Exception: German citizens with foreign certificates must first obtain recognition from the Regierungspraesidium Stuttgart.
Languages of instruction
German is the primary language of instruction for bachelor's programmes and several master's programmes. A substantial number of master's programmes are taught entirely in English, including Agricultural Sciences in the Tropics and Subtropics, Bioeconomy, Crop Sciences, Environmental Science, Biotechnology, Food Science and Technology, Food Systems, Economics with Data Science, and International Business and Economics. German-taught programmes typically require TestDaF TDN 4 or equivalent. The university Language Center offers German as a foreign language courses and intensive German programmes for incoming international students.
Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.
