About Technische Universität Nürnberg (UTN)
The University of Technology Nuremberg (Technische Universität Nürnberg, UTN) is a newly established public research university officially founded on 1 January 2021 - the first state-run university founded in Germany in nearly 30 years. Located in Nuremberg, Bavaria, UTN is dedicated to artificial intelligence and its societal dimensions, combining computer science, engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences in a deliberately interdisciplinary structure.
UTN currently offers two English-taught Master's programmes: AI and Robotics (M.Sc.) and Human and Artificial Intelligence (M.Sc./M.A.), with further programmes planned as the university scales toward a target of 6,000 students. All teaching is in English, follows a project- and competency-based model with small learning groups, and leads to internationally recognised German state degrees.
The university is developing a permanent campus on the former Südbahnhof grounds in southern Nuremberg (37.5 hectares). The inaugural building, Cube One, opened in autumn 2024; the Learning Hub is under construction for winter semester 2027/28. The campus borders the Dutzendteich recreational area and the emerging Lichtenreuth residential district, with two new tram stops planned.
Germany's first university fully focused on artificial intelligence, founded in 2021
All programmes taught in English - no German required at admission
Small-group, project-based teaching with individual instructor feedback instead of traditional exams
Two-department interdisciplinary structure: Computer Science & AI, and Liberal Arts & Social Sciences
New campus under construction at the former Südbahnhof site in Nuremberg - Cube One opened autumn 2024
APS certificate required for applicants with degrees from India, China, or Vietnam

Admissions & fees
What it costs
No tuition fees are charged. Students pay a semester contribution of €82 per semester, which covers basic student services and a semester ticket for public transport. Bavaria introduced non-EU tuition fees for some institutions from WS 2025/26 onwards; UTN's published enrollment page lists only the €82 semester contribution with no separate non-EU surcharge - verify at utn.de before citing.
Admission requirements
UTN currently admits students to Master's programmes only. Applicants need a Bachelor's degree (B.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (Computer Science, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Philosophy, or related disciplines depending on programme). English proficiency is mandatory: IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 90 minimum (Cambridge C1 Advanced or a prior fully English-taught bachelor's also accepted). German A2 is required before the thesis semester. All non-EU/EEA applicants must additionally register with uni-assist e.V. for credential verification. APS certificate is explicitly required for applicants whose qualifying degree was obtained in India, China, or Vietnam. Admission includes an aptitude assessment (Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren) with a 10-15-minute online interview in English. Applications are submitted via UTNexus and the application window runs 1 March - 31 May for the October intake.
Application deadlines
Winter Semester (October start): application window 1 March - 31 May. Enrollment deadline: 30 September. In-person arrival required by 31 October at the latest for visa/residence permit processing. Summer Semester intake is not currently offered.
How international applicants apply
Used. Two-track route for applicants whose degree was not obtained in Germany or the EU/EWR: register and apply in UTN's own portal UTNexus AND additionally submit a full online application at uni-assist e.V. directly for the Technische Universitaet Nuernberg (UTN) and the desired programme - uni-assist checks all international applications for UTN. UTN explicitly does NOT participate in the VPD procedure. Applicants with a German or EU/EWR degree need only UTNexus, no uni-assist. Listed on the uni-assist member list as Technische Universitaet Nuernberg.
Languages of instruction
All current programmes are taught entirely in English. German language proficiency at A2 level is required by the start of the fourth (thesis) semester, not at application.
Entry requirements, intake dates and language levels differ for every degree.

Student accommodation
What Technische Universität Nürnberg (UTN) publishes about housing. German universities do not allocate rooms themselves, so the links below are where applications actually go.
Rooms are allocated by
Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg
Not by the university. Apply to them directly, and expect a waiting list.
From the university
Housing is coordinated via the Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg, which manages student dormitories; demand is high at semester start and applicants are advised to begin the search immediately upon receiving an admission offer.
Campuses & locations
37.5-hectare campus under phased development. Cube One building opened autumn 2024; Learning Hub targeting winter semester 2027/28; departmental founding buildings targeting 2030.
Living in Nürnberg
Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is Bavaria's second-largest city, with approximately 530,000 residents and a metropolitan region of around 3.6 million. It is a major centre for engineering, logistics, and technology companies - home to headquarters of Siemens Energy, MAN, and numerous Mittelstand firms - making it a strong location for industry-linked master's study. The city is well-connected by direct flights via Albrecht Dürer Airport (subway-linked to the city centre) and by ICE rail to Frankfurt in under 2.5 hours. A dense tram and U-Bahn network serves the university site.
Student life & support
UTN is in its founding phase and student life is still forming. The university runs a Welcome Week one week before courses start. Housing is coordinated via the Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg, which manages student dormitories; demand is high at semester start and applicants are advised to begin the search immediately upon receiving an admission offer. All instruction is full-time and in-person; the university explicitly does not recommend part-time study given the active-learning format. Students must register with the Residents' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt) within 14 days of arrival.
